NEW SHARON — Eight North Mahaska basketball players have earned all-conference honors by the South Iowa Cedar League coaches. Four were named to the first team, one to the second term and three earned honorable mention.

North Mahaska and Montezuma girls finished the season tied for the conference title at 13-1. North Mahaska coach L.E. Moore was voted coach of the year.

Sophomores Breckyn Schilling and Regan Grewe were unanimous selections to the first team. Schilling led the conference in points scored (436), field goal attempts (368), field goals made (152) and free throws made at 82.5 percent. She was second in assist with 91, an average of 4.0 per game. She was fourth in steals with 61.

Grewe was fourth in the league in steals with 61, fifth in assists (63), offensive rebounds (68) and field goals per game at 4.3.

Castaneda, a senior, is sixth in the league in offensive rebounding with 59. She had 128 total rebounds and blocked nine shots.

North Mahaska boys tied with Keota for the runnerup spot in the SICL with a 14-2 mark. Lynnville-Sully won the league at 15-1.

Seniors Lane Harmon and Nash Smith were first team picks for the second year in a row. Seniors Steel was second team as he was in 2022 and Ethan Huffman earned honorable mention for the second year. Nolan Andersen, a junior, also earned honorable mention.

Harmon led the league in field goals made at 162. He was second in points with 401 and third in steals with 56. He was fourth in assist and free throws made at 103 and 45 respectively. He went over the 1,000 career point list and has set the school mark in career steals earlier this season.

Smith went over the 1,000 point plateau in November and is fifth in the league in scoring with 334. He is third in field goal attempts (299) and in blocks with 20. He is fifth in free throws made with 42.

Steel led the SICL West in rebounds with 246, second in steals (120) and blocks (26). He was fourth in field goal percentage at 60.7 percent.

Andersen was second in the west in field goal percentage (66.3 percent), third in field goals made (136) and fourth in offensive rebounds with 59.

Huffman was fifth in blocks with 14.

As of Monday, North Mahaska, Lynnville-Sully, Keota and Montezuma boys were still seeking state berths. On the girls Montezuma and North Mahaska were still alive. The boy’s teams play in district finals on Tuesday, Feb. 21 while the girls are in regional finals on Wednesday.
