PELLA — The Statesmen men’s wrestling team ended its regular season dual slate with a 37-15 non-conference loss to Central Tuesday.
William Penn (6-7) won three of the seven contested matches, but could not overcome three forfeits.
With the navy and gold down 24-0 after four weight classes, 157-pounder Steven Skewes (So., Duchesne, Utah, Exercise Science) broke through in a big way as he turned a late 4-3 lead into a bonus-point victory, pinning Luke Condy in a time of 6:27.
Matheson Meade (So., Knoxville, Tenn., Exercise Science) carried that momentum into his match with Colby Tool at 165 pounds. The sophomore pulled out to a huge advantage and eventually held on with his riding-time point being the difference in a 12-11 win.
The Dutch unfortunately wrapped up the meet victory soon thereafter, but 285-pounder Maxwell Diaz (Jr., Miami, Fla., Sports Management) finished the evening in favor of WPU as he pinned Miles Berg in just 1:29.
