DES MOINES – North Mahaska will take its No. 11 ranking into the Class 1A Region 8 basketball tournament beginning February 9. North Mahaska’s half of the bracket is mostly South Iowa Cedar League teams while the bottom half, which contains Lynnville-Sully, is made up of Bluegrass Conference teams.
“I certainly would have rather played some Bluegrass teams rather than facing conference teams again,” said coach L.E. Moore. “We have Tri-County and Sigourney and could play Lynnville-Sully for a third time.”
North Mahaska, 17-2, will face Tri-County (3-17) with the winner playing the winner of Sigourney (14-7) and Moulton-Udell (0-17). That game will be played at North Mahaska on Feb. 14.
On the bottom half of North Mahaska’s bracket L-S, 13-6, faces Moravia (5-13) while Twin Cedars (14-5) hosts Seymour (5-11). Those winners will play at Twin Cedars on Valentine’s Day.
In the top bracket of seven teams, it is a Southeast Iowa Superconference tournament with the exception of Keota from the SICL. No. 8 Winfield-Mount Union is the top seed. The Wolves are 19-0 on the season and has a bye. Holy Trinity Catholic (11-8) meets Wapello (8-11) on Feb. 9 with the winner going to WMU on Feb. 14.
WACO (16-3) hosts Keota (7-13) with the winner playing the winner of Burlington Notre Dame (15-6) and New London (0-20). That game is set for WACO on Feb. 14.
WMU and Twin Cedars are set to host the semifinals with the regional final to be determined based on who advances. That game will be played on Feb. 22.
