The Berklee College of Music has awarded former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr an Honorary Doctorate degree.
A special ceremony held in Boston on Thursday featured a tribute concert celebrating Starr’s success in the music industry, with Berklee students playing his hit songs.
“It’s a huge honor to have and accept this award,” Starr said in his acceptance speech. “In a way it’s like a strange fairy tale … the idea that I’m indoctrinated blows me away. … I just hit the notes. That’s all I do. And it seems I hit them in the right place.”
Sharing a story about how he decided to become a drummer, Starr said, “It was my big dream. You know, it’s still unfolding. I get to play with great guys. It’s just a great life I lead.”
Starr’s close friend and the drummer for Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band Gregg Bissonette and Berklee president Erica Muhl spoke on the occasion.
Once voted as the fifth-greatest drummer of all time and cited as the wealthiest drummer in the world in 2020, Sir Ringo Starr was inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
