Ottumwa’s Toby Schmidt has qualified for the Boys’ 2A State Tennis tournament. Schmidt placed second at Monday’s (5/9) district meet at Iowa City Liberty. Ottumwa placed second in the team competition and will face third place Burlington Friday (5/13) in a Substate match in the 2A team competition, with the winner advancing to State.
In 1A Boys’ Tennis, Grinnell’s Calvin Jaworski placed second in the district meet in Boone to qualify for State. The Tigers were second in the district and will face North Polk Friday for a place in the 1A team tournament.
Also at the 1A district meet in Knoxville, Alejo Marcon of Pella Christian and Joshua Roozeboom of Pella were the top two in singles and will both advance to State. Pella will double its pleasure in doubles as both the Dutch doubles teams qualified for State: Cale Briggs and his brother Jack won the doubles competition, with teammates Cameron Rowe and Cashen Thompson in second place. Pella also won the district team title to qualify for State. Pella Christian was second and Oskaloosa third, so the Eagles and Indians will play Friday for a place at State.
