William Penn’s softball team is on a hot streak. The Statesmen have won six in a row after sweeping a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend. On Friday (4/15), the Statesmen defeated Park twice, 6-4 and 11-9. Then on Saturday (4/16), Penn took two at MidAmerica Nazarene: 7-6 in eight innings and 3-0. On Friday, Statesmen reliever Bianca Castillo saved both games to get the school record for saves in a season with eight. On Saturday, freshman Hayle Hacker from Oskaloosa pitched a five-hit shutout for the game two victory. William Penn is now 18-15 overall and 11-8 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. The Statesmen play another doubleheader Monday afternoon (4/18) at Culver-Stockton.
On the baseball field, William Penn lost three of four games at Peru State over the weekend. All three losses were via shutout. The Statesmen baseball team is now 20-18 overall and 9-15 in the conference. The Statesmen are off until Wednesday (4/20), when they host Iowa Wesleyan in a doubleheader.
The season is over for William Penn’s lacrosse teams. The Statesmen men lost to Columbia, Missouri 10-8 Friday in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals at Statesmen Community Stadium. Boston Romero scored four goals for the Statesmen, who finish the year with an 11-5 record. On the women’s side, Ottawa eliminated William Penn from the conference tournament 16-9 Saturday in Kansas. Bailee Royal scored a second half hat trick for the Statesmen women, who finish the year with a 6-9 record.
Statesmen Community Stadium was busy Thursday and Friday (4/14 & 15) with the William Penn Invitational track meet. Freshman Showalter Johnson won the 100 meters in a time of 10.63 seconds that qualifies him for the NAIA national meet. Other gold medals for the Statesmen men went to Jasper Stottlemyer in the hammer throw and Justin Moeller in the triple jump. The Statesmen women had one first place finish: that was in the 4 by 100 meter relay.
