Julian Lennon, son of the legendary John Lennon, broke his vow to never perform his father’s iconic solo song, “Imagine.” Julian performed the peace anthem for the first time during a benefit for Ukrainian refugees on Saturday, April 9.
“As a human, and as an artist, I felt compelled to respond in the most significant way I could,” Lennon wrote on Instagram along with a candle-lit video performance of the song. “So today, for the first time ever, I publicly performed my Dad’s song, IMAGINE.”
Julian performed the cover as part of the “Stand Up For Ukraine” campaign, a global fund-raising effort broadcast from Warsaw, Poland, which raised over $10 billion for refugee assistance.
“But also because his lyrics reflect our collective desire for peace worldwide. Because within this song, we’re transported to a space, where love and togetherness become our reality, if but for a moment in time…” wrote Lennon. “The song reflects the light at the end of the tunnel, that we are all hoping for…”
“Imagine” was a song from John’s 1971 album of the same name. The best-selling single of his solo career, the lyrics encourage listeners to imagine a world of peace, without materialism, without borders separating nations and without religion.
