For the first time in school history, William Penn’s men’s volleyball team will play in the NAIA national tournament. It was announced Monday (4/4) that the Statesmen were seeded fourth in the 12 team tournament and will play 12th seed Campbellsville, Kentucky on Wednesday, April 13 and 5th seed Vanguard of California on Thursday the 14th in preliminary round games. Statesmen Coach Luke Bentley says he’s excited about the draw.
“Pretty happy with the draw. I think any time you get the 12th seed in a 12 team tournament, you’re pretty excited. But Vanguard’s really tough, so I think it’ll be a challenge for sure. The first time just going is going to be a challenge; everything’s going to be new for us. Really excited for the guys. We’ll get to work this week and see how it goes.”
The Statesmen will take a 23-7 record into the tournament. And fans won’t have far to go to watch the Statesmen at nationals. The tournament takes place at the MidAmerican Energy Rec Plex in West Des Moines.
