Several high school football players from the area have earned Academic All-State honors from the Iowa Football Coaches Association. Three Oskaloosa Indians were honored in Class 4A: Donivan Tighe, Will Campbell and Christian Cavan. Newton’s Adam Mattes is also on the 4A honor roll.
In Class 3A, Caleb Briggs, Blake Meyer, Quinn Rhamy and Jason Knox of Pella earned Academic All-State, along with William Buttell of Knoxville and Alex Smith and Josh Osborne of Grinnell.
Albia’s Chris Kilfoyle is Academic All-State in Class 2A. Cade Molyneux and Colten Clarahan of Sigourney-Keota are on the 1A list. And in Class A, Sean Knockels and Chase Grandia of North Mahaska are recognized, as is Colton Comstock of Pekin.
To qualify for Academic All-State, it takes a 3.7 grade point average or better at the end of a player’s junior year and they must be a senior starter. A player also has to be nominated by their coach and be involved in other extra-curricular activities.
