Jonah Hill is set to portray Jerry Garcia in an upcoming Martin Scorsese-directed musical biopic about the iconic rock band the Grateful Dead.
Hill will reunite with the legendary director after 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street. Meanwhile, both Hill and Scorsese will serve as producers for the movie along with Rick Yorn of LBI Entertainment.
Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who penned the script for American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson, will write the script.
Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann will executive produce along with their late bandmate’s daughter Trixie Garcia, Eric Eisner and Bernie Cahill.
According to Deadline, it is not clear which period of the band will be covered in the film.
The band’s story dates back to its formation in the Bay Area amid the rise of the psychedelic counterculture of the ’60s. Along with Garcia, founding members include Weir, Kreutzmann, Lesh and Ron McKernan.
The group enjoyed a long period of success – from the release of their debut album in 1967 until Garcia’s death in 1995.
