Qualifying for next week’s State High School cross country meet continued Thursday (10/21). In Class 2A, Albia’s girls’ team qualified for state by finishing third at the qualifier in Williamsburg. The Lady D’s were led by Avery Major’s 12th place finish. No boys’ team from the area will go to State, but Albia’s Dawson Bonnett finished tenth overall.
Moving to Class 1A, Pekin’s girls and Pella Christian’s boys’ teams are going to State after placing second at the Pekin qualifier. Rylee Dunkin of Twin Cedars placed second in the girls’ race, with Lauren Steigleder of Pekin fourth and Pella Christian teammates Joslyn Terpstra and Jaclyn Holmes finishing fifth and eighth, respectively. On the boys’ side, Zach Wise of Pekin was fourth and Kaden Van Wyngarden of Pella Christian fifth.
And in the 1A qualifier at Iowa City, Greenlee Smock of Lynnville-Sully was second in the girls’ race with Montezuma teammates Ellen Cook and Alivia Cline placing seventh and eighth. Lynnville-Sully will also have two boys running at State: James Gruver, who was fourth in Thursday’s qualifier, and Zach Morningstar, who was tenth.
