Newton spoiled Oskaloosa’s Homecoming football game Friday (10/1) as the Cardinals defeated the Indians 50-26 at Statesmen Community Stadium. Newton quarterback Zayvier Arguello passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more, with Cody Klein running for the Cardinals’ other two scores. Oskaloosa’s touchdowns came on a 77 yard interception return by Eli Molyneux, a 97 yard kickoff return by JT Baker and two Keaton Flaherty touchdown passes—one to Colin Snitker and the other to Blake Westercamp. Oskaloosa is now 4-2 on the season and 0-2 in Class 4A District 4 play. The Indians play at Pella Friday night (10/8); you can hear that game on KBOE-FM.
Elsewhere on Friday, Sigourney-Keota improved to 6-0 on the year as the Cobras defeated Cardinal of Eldon 50-26…handing Cardinal their first loss of the season. Senior Cade Molyneux rushed for 306 yards and three touchdowns for Sigourney-Keota, with Evan Dawson sacking Cardinal’s quarterback twice. The Cobras’ next game is Friday night at Central Decatur. In college football, William Penn lost a heartbreaker Saturday (10/2) at Central Methodist. With 15 seconds to play, freshman Ethan Olivas was set to kick a field goal that would have given the Statesmen the lead, but the kick was blocked and Central Methodist won it 28-27. Senior Ben Sherman rushed for 169 yards and a touchdown for the Statesmen….with freshman quarterback Rodney Hall completing 9 of 15 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns and also rushing for a score. The Statesmen are now 1-5 on the year. They have a bye this week and will open North Division play October 16 at Grand View.
