Keaton Flaherty passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as Oskaloosa’s football team defeated Ottumwa 35-14 Friday night (8/27) in Ottumwa. The senior completed 18 of 30 passes with no interceptions, throwing TD passes to AJ Lawrence, Blake Westercamp and Waylon Bolibaugh. Wyatt Grubb ran for Osky’s other score. The Indians outgained Ottumwa 340 yards to 195 and Osky’s defense also intercepted two passes. Ottumwa’s two touchdowns came on runs by Austin Fountain and Tanner Schark. Oskaloosa will open its home season Friday night (9/3) against Knoxville. You can hear that game on KBOE-FM with kickoff at 7:30.
Elsewhere Friday night, Sigourney-Keota rallied for ten fourth quarter points to beat Durant on the road 23-20. Senior Cade Molyneux ran for 187 yards and a touchdown and also threw a 40 yard touchdown pass to Levi Crawford. Colten Clarahan also booted three field goals for the Cobras. Sigourney-Keota opens its home season this coming Friday against Mid-Prairie. That game will be on KMZN AM & FM.
Switching to college football, 17th ranked Benedictine spoiled William Penn’s season opener Saturday night (8/28), beating the Statesmen 35-13. Fullback Ben Sherman rushed for 69 yards and the Statesmen’s only touchdown, while freshman kicker Ethan Olivas from Eddyville booted two field goals. The Statesmen hit the road Saturday (9/4) to take on seventh-ranked Baker.
In college soccer, William Penn’s men knocked off 23rd ranked Morningside 5-1 in Sioux City. The Statesmen are now 3-0 on the year. Meanwhile, the Statesmen women lost their season opener Saturday at Morningside 3-2 in overtime.
Also last Saturday, the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont volleyball team won a tournament at West Branch. The Rockets defeated Don Bosco, Iowa City Regina and New London in pool play…..before defeating Winfield-Mount Union in the semifinals and West Branch in the title match. The Rockets will host Centerville Tuesday night (8/31)—and that will be Parents Night.
