Former Procol Harum’s bassist Alan Cartwright died on March 4 at the age of 75.

Cartwright passed away in the early hours of March 4. He had been diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2020.

Cartwright was a member of Procol Harum from 1971 to 1976. He first met singer-keyboardist Gary Brooker in 1966 and joined the progressive rock band five years later.

He first appeared on their 1972 recording, Procol Harum Live: In Concert With the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. He later played on the band’s three studio albums, including 1973’s Grand Hotel, 1974’s Exotic Birds and Fruit and 1975’s Procol’s Ninth.

He departed from the band before its open-air concert at York’s Museum Gardens in July 1976. He was replaced by Procol Harum’s multi-instrumentalist Chris Copping.

“It is with great sadness that I heard of the passing of Alan Cartwright, bassist with Procol Harum from 1971-1976,” Brooker wrote on March 8. “Looking back, he was always a very solid, musical, and reliable bass player, and a good bloke who gave of his best both in the studio and on the extensive tours Procol did when he was with us.”
