Two down and one to go for the William Penn men’s basketball team. Tuesday night (3/2), the Statesmen added to their Heart of America Athletic Conference regular season title by defeating Benedictine 92-76 for the Conference tournament championship. Senior Karmari Newman scored 23 of his team-high 28 points in the first half, pleasing Statesmen Coach John Henry.
“Karmari’s on fire right now. He had nine threes in the second half the other night and he just continued that in the first half tonight. And I thought not just from three, but his floor game to get his mid-range shots and layups, too, was big.”
Kevion Blaylock added 20 points for William Penn, who improved to 24-1 on the season. The only trophy remaining for William Penn is the NAIA national title. They’ll find out Thursday (3/4) who they will face in the first round of the nationals….and being ranked second in the country, the Statesmen should get a very high seed in the national tournament.
