Here’s what happened at Thursday’s (2/18) opening day of the State High School wrestling meet.
Oskaloosa’s Leland Evans lost his first bout in Class 3A at 145 pounds. Evans lost a 7-2 decision to a wrestler from Dubuque Hempstead, then pinned a wrestler from Marion in the consolation round. He’ll resume competition Friday morning (2/19). Elsewhere in Class 3A, Ottumwa’s Corbin Grace at 113 and Trevor Summers at 170 won their opening bouts. The Bulldogs’ Jasmine Luedke at 106, Braylon Griffiths at 132 and Zachariah Shoemaker at 152 all lost their first two bouts and are eliminated. And Pella’s Kody Huisman pinned his opponent in 18 seconds to reach the quarterfinals at 285 pounds; while Ryan Van Donselaar of the Dutch lost his first bout at 160 and won in the wrestlebacks to stay in contention for a medal.
In Class 2A, Grinnell’s Landon Kirby at 160 and Kamrin Steveson at 285 both won their opening bouts to reach the quarterfinals. Grinnell’s Andres Cantillo lost both his matches and is eliminated. EBF’s Skyler Young lost his first match at 285 and won in the wrestlebacks. Albia’s Carter Anderson won his first match at 106 pounds, while teammates Brodie Conner at 113, Justin Keller at 132, Stephen Conley at 152 and Paul Ballard at 220 all lost their first two bouts. And PCM’s Colby Tool won his opening bout Thursday at 152, while teammates Landon Fenton at 145 and Cooper Sloan at 220 both lost their first bouts and won their second to stay alive.
In Class 1A, Trace Goemaat of North Mahaska won his opening bout in the 285 pound division by pinning Mack Ortner of Don Bosco. Goemaat faces a wrestler from Pocahontas Area in the second round. Paul DeJong of North Mahaska lost his first bout at 120 and won his second to stay alive. Pekin’s Cael Baker at 152 and Mason Juhl at 182 both lost their first bouts, but won in the wrestlebacks. Sigourney-Keota’s Cade Molyneux at 170 lost in the first round and won in the second, while teammate Cade Streigel at 195 lost his first two bouts and has been eliminated. And Gentry Walston of Lynnville-Sully lost his first bout at 113, but won his second match.
