When you hear the score of Montezuma’s Class 8-man football semifinal against Remsen St. Mary’s, remember that it’s a football score. Second ranked Remsen defeated the fifth ranked Braves 108-94 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls Thursday (11/12). Montezuma led 46-36 at halftime and was on top 60-36 midway through the third quarter. But Remsen came back with three touchdowns in 39 seconds to tighten the game, and it was tied 74-all after three quarters. In the fourth, Remsen went in front on a Brendan Fisch touchdown run and a two point conversion. The Braves twice got within two points, but a Fisch touchdown followed 12 seconds later by an Alex Schroeder interception returned for a touchdown put the game out of Montezuma’s reach. If you like offense, this was the game for you. Both teams combined for nearly 1500 yards of total offense. Montezuma quarterback Eddie Burgess passed for 689 yards and nine touchdowns…and also ran for four TDs. Trey Shearer caught 20 passes, seven for touchdowns. Remsen St. Mary’s quarterback Blaine Harpenau rushed for 354 yards and four touchdowns, while passing for another four touchdowns. Remsen St. Mary’s is now 11-0 on the year; they’ll play Fremont-Mills next Thursday for the State 8-man title. Montezuma finishes with a 10-1 record.
