Mark David Chapman, who assassinated John Lennon, said in his latest parole hearing that he deserved the death penalty for committing the crime.

Chapman told a parole board last month that he killed the Beatles legend 40 years ago for glory.

“I assassinated him… because he was very, very, very famous and that’s the only reason and I was very, very, very, very much seeking self-glory. Very selfish,” Chapman said.

“I deserve zero, nothing. At the time I deserved the death penalty.
When you knowingly plot someone’s murder and know it’s wrong and you do it for yourself, that’s a death penalty right there, in my opinion,” a transcript released on Monday quoted Chapman as saying.

“At the time my thinking was he has all of this money, lives in this beautiful apartment and he is into music representing a more cautious lifestyle, a more giving lifestyle,” Chapman told parole commissioners. “It made me angry and jealous compared to the way I was living at the time. There was jealousy in there.”

Chapman shot and killed Lennon on the night of December 8, 1980, in front of his Upper West Side apartment building in Manhattan. Lennon had autographed his album, Double Fantasy, for him earlier in the day.

New York State correctional officers revealed last month that Chapman had been denied parole for the 11th time.
