Monday (8/10) was the first day of practice for high school football, volleyball, cross country and girls swimming in Iowa. At Oskaloosa High football practice, things looked as they would any other year with players working out with helmets, but no pads. Indians Coach Jake Jenkins says concerns over coronavirus have forced a few changes.
“Down at practice you’re going to see we get water breaks every 10-15 minutes. And every time we get water breaks, we say ‘Hands.’ And so they (players) go over there and we have managers going around spraying their hands every 10-15 minutes, so they can wash their hands out on the field. On top of that, every item that we use, including balls, is going to be sprayed and wiped down, so we can sanitize there…..making sure we’re doing everything we can to keep everybody as healthy as possible. And then, locker rooms, we’re splitting up into four different locker rooms so we can space out, social distance, and help kids stay clean and stay healthy.”
Oskaloosa kicks off its 2020 football season Friday, August 28 against Dike-New Hartford at Statesmen Community Stadium. Remember, you can hear Oskaloosa High football all season long on KBOE-FM.
