U2’s Bono and The Edge played an acoustic rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” on Saturday while performing for “Songs From an Empty Room,” an event that benefits unemployed crew members.
“Songs From an Empty Room” took place in five iconic Irish venues and benefited Minding Creative Minds and the Association of Irish Stage Technicians.
“There’s one annoying aspect of an Irish crew that has to be said,” Bono is seen saying in a visual posted on YouTube. “Wherever you go in the world, whatever venue you’re playing — whether it’s the Olympia or 3 Arena or Madison Square Garden — you walk into the venue and it’s a big moment, and you’ll hear a song that we said, ‘We’ll never, ever play this.’ And that’s right, ‘Stairway to Heaven.’
These professionals believe they play this better than the band. And you know, it might be true.”
The Edge played the opening guitar part, while Bono sang the lead vocal part and belted out some of the song’s heftier notes. Bono, who lost his way after singing the first few verses, said, “It makes me wonder … if they’re not right. They can play the tune better.
We love you.”
U2 are currently in the process of creating their follow-up to 2018’s Songs of Experience.
