Brian Wilson performed Beach Boys classic “God Only Knows” and his very own hit “Love and Mercy” when he appeared as a guest on Stephen Colbert’s “The Late Show” on Thursday.
It was a #PlayAtHome performance by Wilson, who sang from his home, accompanied by his piano. He began by saying, “Hi, this is Brian Wilson. I just want you guys to know that we’re all in this together.”
Wilson played the stripped down version of “Love and Mercy”. The song was originally released as part of his self-titled solo LP in 1988. He later reimagined the track for the I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times soundtrack.
Wilson then sang “God Only Knows,” which he co-wrote with Tony Asher for the Beach Boys’ 1966 album Pet Sounds. “I love you all, love and mercy to you all,” he said after performing the song.
Wilson, whose last solo album was 2015’s No Pier Pressure, is set to reissue Orange Crate Art, his first collaborative record with Van Dyke Parks, on June 19, to mark the album’s 25th anniversary.
Last year, the veteran teamed up with Kesha for “Resentment,” a song from her High Road album. The track also featured Sturgill Simpson.
In March this year, he took part in Rolling Stone’s In My Room live series, where he played piano renditions of the Beach Boys’ “Do It Again” and “Love and Mercy.”
