The Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office got a call around 5:10am Saturday about a vehicle going west in the eastbound lane of Highway 163 between Oskaloosa and Pella. Marion County law enforcement got the same call a short time later. A Marion County Deputy found the vehicle and made a traffic stop near Otley. But when the deputy left his vehicle, the other vehicle took off, going east at a high rate of speed. Near the intersection of Highway 163 and Eaton Avenue, the vehicle lost control. It rolled several times, hit a building and the driver was ejected. 46-year-old Koua Yang of Fresno, California was pronounced dead at the scene.
