Lynyrd Skynyrd have released a new song, “Last of the Street Survivors,” on social media and have also offered fans a free download of the track.

“As promised, here’s a little gift from our Skynyrd family to yours,” the band said. “We want thank everyone for making this possible. Stay safe and God bless.”

Johnny Van Zant co-wrote the song along with guitarist Rickey Medlocke, Grammy Award-winning songwriter Tom Hambridge and co-founder of the band, guitarist Gary Rossington. The song narrates the band’s career, giving a peek into its highs and disastrous lows.

“We played the Garden in New York City / We rocked the house down in New Orleans / We think about the ones we lost along the way / As we’re rolling down the road with Mr. Breeze,” sings Van Zant at the start, and later joins the chorus: “Out here on the 75, keeping the dream alive / Highway brothers and midnight riders / We’re the last of the street survivors.”

The new song gets its name from the band’s farewell tour. In fact, the tour name was inspired by the band’s 1977 hit album, Street Survivors.

The Last of the Street Survivors tour, which commenced in 2018, was supposed to continue this year but has been put off due to the coronavirus outbreak.
