For the second straight year, Montezuma will be making his and hers trips to the State basketball tournament. Last Wednesday (2/26), the girls earned their trip to the Class 1A State Tournament. On Saturday (2/29), Montezuma’s boys earned their spot in the Class 1A State Tournament with a 58-35 victory over Nodaway Valley in the Substate 5 title game in Knoxville. The Braves’ Cole Watts hit three three-pointers to give Montezuma a 9-0 start and they never trailed. Watts talks about that early cushion.
“It’s a great comfort. We hit those threes, got out (in front) by a lot and we could just play our game and focus, settle in, get everybody just comfortable and they had to play catch-up with us.”
The Braves improved to 23-2 on the season and will take a ten game winning streak into the state tournament. Montezuma’s boys will open play at the state tournament on Monday, March 9 at 9:30am against Martensdale-St. Mary’s. Pregame would start at 9:15 And you’ll be able to hear Montezuma’s boys AND girls at State on KBOE-FM. The Montezuma girls have their first state tournament game Wednesday afternoon against St. Ansgar scheduled to tipoff at 3:15.
Also in Class 1A boys’ basketball Saturday, Springville defeated Pekin in the Substate 4 title game 72-65. The Panthers end the year with a 19-5 record.
