Legendary Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart passed away on Tuesday, January 7, at the age of 67.
A brief statement on the Rush website confirmed the news, revealing that Peart “lost his incredibly brave three and a half year battle with brain cancer.”
“We ask that friends, fans, and media alike understandably respect the family’s need for privacy and peace at this extremely painful and difficult time,” Rush said in the statement.
“Those wishing to express their condolences can choose a cancer research group or charity of their choice and make a donation in Neil Peart’s name,” the band added. “Rest in peace brother.”
Peart, who was seen by many as the greatest drummer of all time, was born September 12, 1952, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
He joined Rush in July of 1974 on the eve of the band’s first American release and tour.
