A pair of John Lennon’s sunglasses was sold at auction for approximately $183,000 at Sotheby’s London.

The glasses were in the possession of Lennon’s former chauffeur Alan Herring, who collected them from the back seat of a car after the former Beatle left them there in the summer of 1968.

As per Sotheby’s description, the auctioned memorabilia was “a gold tone wire-framed sunglasses by Oliver Goldsmith, round green tinted lenses, with ‘Oliver Goldsmith’ engraved on each inner temple, non-prescription, lacking screw on one side resulting in loose temple, and lens, minor scratching to lenses.”

Sotheby’s describes the item as “the most iconic sunglasses in rock and roll history.”

The pair of round glasses was given to Lennon in 1966 to prepare for his role in Richard Lester’s film “How I Won the War.” Quickly they became synonymous with his image and later his name.
