In a wide-ranging interview with Billboard, Beatles legend Paul McCartney shared his thoughts on a new Let It Be documentary being put together from hours of archival footage by director Peter Jackson.

“One of the things we’re working on is the 58 hours of footage that turned into the Let It Be film,” McCartney said. “The director tells me that the overall impression is of friends working together, whereas because it was so close to The Beatles’ breakup, my impression of the film was of a sad moment.”

“Something’s going to come out from that footage,” he added. “It won’t be called Let It Be, but there will be something.”

The Jackson-helmed Let It Be documentary was announced in January, with the Oscar-winning director describing the film as the “the ultimate ‘fly on the wall’ experience that Beatles fans have long dreamt about.”

The original Let It Be film, documenting the Beatles rehearsing and recording songs for their final studio album, was released in 1970.
