Friday night (9/13), the Oskaloosa High football team looks to bounce back from last week’s 50 point loss at Washington…when the Indians play at Fairfield. Indians Coach Jake Jenkins talks about how to get last week’s game out of everyone’s heads.
“You go back to the basics, what went wrong, where was the major meltdown. And defensively it was communicating. If you can’t communicate, you cannot line up; if you can’t line up, you can’t play. So it started in the meetings on Saturday morning. I said ‘Here are the checks for the next week. When you see this set, you’re going to be in this.’ I made the guys physically say it out loud. I would not say it, I’m not going to call them anymore. I’m going to signal from the sidelines. It’s their responsibility to look to me, get the signal and call out the plays because I can’t play the game for them and I can’t stand on the field with them. So during practice, I’ve been off the field. when we’ve been doing team defense, signalling everything, not saying a word. We need to learn to communicate, so we’re not going to not just complain about it, we’re going to do something about it. So us coaches have changed first, so our team, in turn, can change.”
Oskaloosa comes into Friday night’s game with a 1-1 record, while Fairfield is 0-2. You can hear Oskaloosa High football on KBOE-FM and KBOEradio.com. Our coverage starts at 7:15 with the kickoff at 7:30.
