David Gilmour raised more than $21 million for charity by auctioning his personal guitar collection at Christie’s in New York.
There were 127 guitars from the English guitarist-singer’s collection up for sale.
Christie’s said bidders from all over the world competed to buy guitars from the personal collection of the Pink Floyd singer and songwriter.
“Black Strat,” the 1969 Fender Stratocaster guitar that Gilmour used on every Pink Floyd album, was sold at a record price of $3,975,000.
It was a new world record for a guitar at auction, Christie’s says.
Proceeds from the auction, which totaled $21,490,750, will be donated to ClientEarth, a global charity organization.
Announcing the donation on the eve of the sale, Gilmour wrote on social media, “The global climate crisis is the greatest challenge that humanity will ever face.”
