What a weekend at the state high school track and field meet. Oskaloosa’s boys’ set two school records Saturday (5/18). Brayden Van Kampen, Iszac Schultz, Aaron Blom and Carter Huyser finished third in the Class 3A 4 by 400 relay in a time of 3:22.4. The Indians also set a school record in the sprint medley as Aaron Blom, Casey Hill, Brayden Van Kampen and Carter Huyser finished sixth.
Also in Class 3A boys’ track, Pella took third in the 4 by 100 shuttle hurdles and Jordan Buma of the Dutch was sixth in the 110 hurdles. Pella finished sixth in the team competition. Also in 3A boys, Joe Simon of Grinnell was 8th in the 800. Oskaloosa’s Carter Huyser ended up 12th in that race after having to dodge a couple runners ahead of him who had tumbled.
In girls’ 3A track, Pella ended up fifth in the team competition, thanks to a second place finish in the 4 by 100 relay, third in the 4 by 400 and 5th in the sprint medley relay. Grinnell was 13th in the sprint medley and Oskaloosa 22nd.
In boys’ 1A track, Tyson Vander Linden of Lynnville-Sully won the 400 hurdles in a time of 53.591 seconds…coming in 6/1000 of a second ahead of the runner-up! Earlier in the meet, Tyson also won the 400 meters. Vander Linden was also part of the Hawks’ sprint medley team that won the gold medal. Gage Vander Leest of Lynnville-Sully was fifth in the 110 hurdles as the Hawks finished fourth in the 1A boys’ team competition. Also in 1A boys, Pekin’s Brady Millikin was second in the 1600 and the Panthers placed third in the 4 by 100 relay, fourth in the 4 by 100 shuttle hurdles and fourth in the 4 by 200 en route to an eighth place finish in the team standings. Also in 1A boys’, Payton Schauf of Sigourney was third in the discus and Savages’ teammate Spencer Magill was seventh in the high jump; while Jarrett Stodghill of North Mahaska was fifth in the 400 hurdles and Trey Albert of Cardinal was seventh in the 200.
In 1A girls’ at the state high school track meet, Montezuma was third in the team standings, just one point between co-champions Alburnett and Kee. The Bravettes had a second place finish from Shelby Conger in the high jump and Shateah Wetering was fourth in the 200. Montezuma’s 4 by 400 relay team came in second, while the Bravettes’ sprint medley relay team was third. Sigourney was 11th in the team standings; the Savages’ Summer Barthelman was second in the 400 hurdles and she was part of Sigourney’s 4 by 100 shuttle hurdles team that finished fifth.
Ottumwa’s girls’ track team finished sixth in Class 4A. Allison Bookin-Nosbisch won the 800 meters with twin sister Grace coming in fourth. The Lady Bulldogs’ 4 by 400 meter relay team finished sixth, and Ottumwa’s Maria Horn placed in four wheelchair events: second in the 200, third in the 100, 400 and 800.
In Class 2A boys’ track, Kalen Walker of EBF placed third in the 200 and fifth in the 100. And Albia’s 4 by 100 relay team finished third. In 2A girls, Pella Christian was 13th in the team standings, as the Eagles placed second in both the 4 by 100 and 4 by 100 shuttle hurdle relays and fifth in the sprint medley.
