Two of the top Class 1A girls basketball teams in the state squared off Tuesday night (1/15) when 5th ranked Lynnville-Sully hosted number 3 Montezuma. And the game was as exciting as you would expect, with Montezuma winning 53-49. Bravettes Coach Janel Burgess talked about the win.
“I thought our composure, I thought our experience helped us probably more so than anything. If it was making a tough shot, if it was getting a big defensive deflection that led to a steal, if it was getting huge steals that led to a couple of open points for us. I think all of those things were all keys to our success and I’m just really proud of our kids’ togetherness.”
Junior Shateah Wetering had 23 points to lead Montezuma; Carson Fisk had 16 for Lynnville-Sully. Montezuma now 14-1 on the year, Lynnville-Sully is 11-3.
Boys basketball last night, 3rd ranked Montezuma remained undefeated…but it took some work. The Braves trailed Lynnville-Sully 31-28 at halftime, but they stormed back in the third quarter, outscoring the Hawks 24-3 in that frame and went on to a 62-45 win. Montezuma Coach Derrick Dengler talked about that third quarter.
“To be honest, I think the third quarter was about being solid. I thought our guys just played solid man to man, contested shots, were active with their hands, played with their feet a lot better instead of gambling.”
Freshman Trey Shearer led Montezuma with 18 points as the Braves go to 14-0 on the season; Blaize Kuhlman had 12 for Lynnville-Sully; the Hawks are now 11-2 on the year.
