The 20th ranked William Penn women defeated number 23 Central Methodist 77-73 Monday night (1/7) at Penn Gymnasium. It was a game where the Statesmen trailed by 11 early in the second quarter, but fought back to tie the game after three quarters and then take the lead for good on a layup by Brenda Pennington with 12 seconds to play. Coach Steve Williamson says Pennington is the best point guard in the conference.
“I can’t say enough about that kid. She’s special. She handles the ball so well; she runs our team; she’s a coach on the floor; she knows exactly what I want. She does a great job of getting everybody involved. She’ll do everything; she’s a 5.3 rebounder, she’s a 5.3 shooter, she’s a defender. She’s a great kid. Her and Vashti together are awesome.”
Pennington had 15 points last night. Senior Vashti Nwagbaroacha had 28 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Statesmen as William Penn improves to 14-1 overall and 9-1 in the Heart of America Conference. The Statesmen women and men will host Mount Mercy Thursday night (1/10).
