William Penn’s men’s and women’s basketball teams were winners on Saturday (12/8). The fourth-ranked Statesmen men defeated number 17 Peru State 83-76 to improve to 12-1 on the season and 6-1 in the Heart of America Conference. Senior Omar Sherman led the Statesmen with 25 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots. Sherman talked about the win:
“We were playing really aggressive on defense. Overall, just offensively and defensively we were just playing really aggressive and when we do that, it means good things for us.”
The Statesmen men play at Baker tomorrow night (12/11) before taking a break for the holidays.
William Penn’s women had an easier time of it Saturday, defeating Peru State 78-40. An 11-0 Statesmen start to the second quarter put the game out of reach. Senior guard Shamiah Oliver helped spark that second quarter outburst.
“It all comes from the energy–from the bench, from the players. We all come together and we kind of fire each other up. So that really gets me going and we all play together and play for each other. Anybody can fire it up any night. We’ve got a bunch of weapons on our team.”
Senior Vashti Nwagbaraocha had 19 points for William Penn. The 20th ranked Statesmen women play at number 23 Baker Tuesday night.
