William Penn’s men’s basketball team remains unbeaten for the season, but Saturday’s (11/10) game with William Woods was a close call. The Statesmen trailed by 12 with 15 minutes to play, but rallied for an 82-77 victory at Penn Gymnasium. Statesmen Coach John Henry talked about the game.
“You know, it wasn’t pretty. As a matter a fact, calling it not pretty, I might as well just call it like it is: that was straight ugly. When you miss 16 free throws and give up 18 offensive rebounds and then add in we had 17 turnovers, we should not win. I thought just pounding the ball down low and getting our big fellas running was a difference in the game finally woke up and made some plays. We switched to a zone with about 12 minutes to go in the game and I thought that gave us a little bit of a lift, too.”
Senior Marlon Alcindor had 19 points for William Penn. The Statesmen are now 4-0 on the season. They open Heart of America Conference play Wednesday night (11/14) at Culver-Stockton.
The Statesmen football team ended its season Saturday (11/10) with a 23-20 loss at Grand View. Quarterback Tyler Wood ran for a touchdown and passed for another. The Rock & Ladder Trophy will now reside at Grand View until the teams meet next season. William Penn ends the year 4-7 overall and 2-3 in the Heart of America Conference North Division.
