Montezuma’s first trip to the Class 1A State high school volleyball tournament was a short one. The Bravettes lost to Holy Trinity Catholic in three straight sets last night (11/7) in the state quarterfinals in Cedar Rapids. The first two sets were very close, with Holy Trinity Catholic winning 25-22 and 26-24. Then in the third set, the Crusaders won 25-17. The No Coast Network asked Montezuma Coach Katie Dunlap if her team ran out of gas after battling so hard in the first two sets.
“I don’t think it’s so much of a physical gas as an emotional gas. With the girls, you can say ‘Get your head in the right place, let’s go.’ But at the end of the day, we lost two sets. That weighs on you a little bit and it’s hard, it’s so hard to pick yourself back out of that, as much as we try. I think emotionally they were wearing.”
Montezuma was led by senior Riley Gatton with 15 kills and two block assists. Junior Shateah Wetering added 12 kills and was in on four blocks. Montezuma ends the year with a record of 30 and 7.
