Oskaloosa High’s volleyball team won its first game in the Class 4A Region 7 tournament last night (10/17). The Indians defeated Newton in three straight sets: 25-15, 25-15 and 25-12. Indians Coach Jen Comfort says the team had strong serving and also had big nights from middle hitters Ashley Drost and Emily Richmond.
“That just shows a team that’s working hard when we get our middles involved. We try to stay in system and try and get as many middle attacks as we can. Our plan was to serve aggressively and get our middles involved, but also just get as strong an attack as possible.”
Drost had nine kills and was also part of two blocks; Richmond had four kills. Faith DeRonde also had nine kills, with Emma Kelderman serving three aces. Oskaloosa improves to 12-18 on the year. The Indians play at Clear Creek-Amana this coming Tuesday in the Region semifinals.
Also in 4A Region 7 volleyball last night, Carlisle swept Knoxville 3-0. Carlisle will play at Pella in the other Region semifinal on Tuesday.
