William Penn’s Homecoming football game Saturday had plenty of drama. The Statesmen defeated Culver-Stockton 24-21 at Lacey Recreation Complex. Amos Johnson rushed for 97 yards and two touchdowns for the Statesmen, who could only watch as a potential game-tying field goal missed with 13 seconds to play. William Penn is 3-4 on the year, 1-0 in the Heart of America Conference’s North Division. The Statesmen host Peru State on Saturday.
William Penn’s men’s soccer team scored an upset Saturday, beating 16th ranked Benedictine 2-1 in Oskaloosa. Steve Avelar and Amgad Hassan scored second half goals for the Statesmen, who got their second win over a top 25 team this season. William Penn’s men are now 6-2 in the conference and 11-3 overall.
The Statesmen women lost to ninth ranked Benedictine 3-1. Both William Penn soccer teams play at Faith Baptist Bible tomorrow.
William Penn’s volleyball team had a perfect weekend. The Statesmen scored a 3-0 sweep Friday at Culver-Stockton and then swept Governors State at home on Saturday. The 18-10 Statesmen host Clarke Tuesday night.
And the William Penn women’s golf team is ranked ninth in the NAIA top 25…and for the first time in school history, received a first place vote. The Statesmen women have won six consecutive regular season tournaments going back to last year. They’ll try to add to that at the NAIA preview today at tomorrow in Oklahoma City.
