If it’s not the comeback of the century, it’s in the running. William Penn’s football team trailed Mid America Nazarene by 19 points in the third quarter Saturday in Olathe, Kansas….and the Statesmen were still trailing 35-23 going into the fourth quarter. Then backup quarterback Alex Crehan ran 59 yards for a touchdown to cut the gap. Then, Jonathan Thomas stole the ball as he was making a quarterback sack and ran 67 yards for the go-ahead touchdown…as the Statesmen score an improbable 36-35 win. William Penn is now 2-2 on the season; they’ll play at Central Methodist Saturday night.
In other notes from the weekend: William Penn’s volleyball team lost a conference game at Grand View Friday, then won two at a triangular in Lawrence, Kansas. The Statesmen will host Culver-Stockton tomorrow night.
William Penn’s women golfers won a tournament outside Sioux City. Senior Elise Warne was the medalist with a 36-hole score of 148. Teammate Brittany Evans was second, two strokes back.
The Statesmen’s men’s and women’s soccer teams had to wait for the officials to arrive in Oskaloosa because of a scheduling mixup on Saturday. But they both ended up victorious. The William Penn men beat Iowa Wesleyan 2-0, while the women defeated Simpson 3-1 with two penalties by Raunice Butler making the difference. William Penn’s soccer teams will host Clarke Wednesday…and that will be senior night.
