Update: Death Investigation Underway in Oskaloosa

Update: This article has been updated to reflect information provided during a news conference with the Oskaloosa Police Department at 11:30 AM on Friday, March 2.

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – An investigation is underway after a man died last night following a stabbing incident in Oskaloosa. Oskaloosa Police Chief Jake McGee, along with Iowa DCI investigator Mike Motsinger, have confirmed the death of William Penn University student Marquis Todd. Officials said during a news conference that Todd was stabbed after a minor vehicular accident on North 3rd Street in Oskaloosa on Thursday night. Todd’s friends then took him to the Jiffy gas station in Oskaloosa. No one has been taken into custody yet and the investigation is ongoing. Law enforcement did not provide any names of persons of interest during the time of the news conference.

University officials confirmed the death of Todd via a letter signed by University President John Ottosson, which was published by KCCI:

Dear Penn Family,

I write this note with a heavy heart. Last night, there was an incident in town that led to the death of a member of one of our family, student Marquis Todd. Details of the incident are still unfolding and under investigation. It is known that the other individuals in this incident were not affiliated with the University.

The University is cooperating fully with the Oskaloosa Police Department with their investigation and in turn, the OPD is keeping the University apprised of the situation as details unfold.

William Penn Student Projects Place in ICMA Contests

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – William Penn University Digital Communication students received five awards from the 2017 Better Student News Media and 2017 Better Student Television contests. The Iowa College Media Association (ICMA) hosts the annual contests. Students were honored at the yearly ICMA convention held in Des Moines on Feb. 1–2.

Motivational Speaker to Visit William Penn

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – Author and Motivational Speaker, Antonio Neves, will be on William Penn University’s Oskaloosa campus on Tuesday, February 6 at 7 p.m.

Neves has written “50 Things Every College Student Should Know” as well as “50 Ways to Excel in your First Job… and Life”. As a career service coach, he helps people navigate new positions and responsibilities, prepare for interviews and become better leaders. Throughout his career, Neves has helped teams connect with one another, collaborate to improve results and foster a culture of allies.

He has delivered hundreds of keynote speeches to thousands of people at conferences, top companies, corporations, trade associations and universities. Neves has worked for 10 years as a correspondent and producer in the television industry in New York City with networks including NBC, PBS, BET, Nickelodeon and more.

William Penn University Drops Clive Location, Adds Johnston

Additional Location to Provide Accessibility and Flexibility to Students

William Penn University welcomed students to their new metro location in Johnston yesterday. The Clive location closed as of December 31, 2017, however the Oskaloosa location remains open.

The addition of the Johnston location makes classes more accessible to central Iowans by meeting student needs and increasing educational opportunities for both classroom and online learning. These programs are designed for people who would like to earn or finish their degree to fit their schedule. Classes begin every eight weeks. Bachelor degrees in accounting, business management, human resources management, psychology, sociology, human services and political science are offered. 2017 ‘Hour of Code’ at WPU

The 2017 Hour of Code at William Penn University (WPU) is being held Saturday, December 9, 2017 from 10:00 am–Noon at the Musco Technology Center (northwest corner of the William Penn University campus), Room 104. The structure is a “come & go” environment, so allow at least 45 minutes or plan to stay the full 2 hours. This a free event.

William Penn and KMZN/KMYQ to Partner for Basketball Broadcasts

Oskaloosa–William Penn Athletics Director Nik Rule is proud to announce that the University has entered into an agreement with KMZN/KMYQ to broadcast radio coverage of all the men’s and women’s basketball Heart of America Athletic Conference games this winter.

Beginning with tonight’s home doubleheader against Mount Mercy (5:30 & 7:30 tipoffs), KMZN 99.5 FM and 740 AM will serve as the flagship stations for all Statesmen basketball radio broadcasts, both at home in Penn Gymnasium and on the road. KMZN/KMYQ Sports Director Emery Songer will be the ‘Voice of the Statesmen’, while Kiley Broadway will provide color commentary for most contests.

Listeners in Sigourney, Keota, Kalona, North and South English, Williamsburg, Wellman and Washington can also hear the games simulcasted on the company’s newest station, KMYQ 97.1 FM. The games will be broadcast over the internet at www.radiokmzn.com as well.

The entities have been partners for numerous years for William Penn football broadcasts.

“We are excited to partner with the team at KMZN/KMYQ to be the voice of William Penn Athletics and cover our conference basketball games this winter,” Rule said. “Many of our teams are among the best in the nation in small college athletics and we look forward to having the leader in radio in our community broadcast our games.”

Juveniles Start Fire in William Penn Gymnasium

On Saturday November 11, 2017 at approximately 12:37 p.m. the Oskaloosa Police Department and Oskaloosa Fire Department were dispatched to 201 Trueblood Avenue at William Penn University in reference to a smoke report.

William Penn Security contacted the Mahaska County 911 Center and advised that the old upper basketball gymnasium was full of smoke. William Penn Security activated the smoke alarms and the building was evacuated.

Upon emergency services arrival at the scene it was discovered that a fire had been deliberately set in a return air vent located at the north east corner of the gymnasium. The fire was extinguished by emergency personnel and shortly thereafter persons were allowed to return into the building.

On Tuesday November 14, 2017 the Oskaloosa Police Department charged two twelve year old male juveniles from Oskaloosa with Arson in the Second Degree. Both juveniles have been referred to Juvenile Court Services as required by law.

Arson in the Second Degree is a class C felony punishable by up to ten years in a state penitentiary. At the time of this release the Oskaloosa Police Department has not received an estimate for damages from the Arson reported on November 11, 2017.

It should be noted a criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Statesmen Wrestling Falls 24-21 to Waldorf

Oskaloosa–The William Penn wrestling team came up a bit short in its first dual meet of the year, falling 24-21 to Waldorf Tuesday.

WPU (0-1) won two matches and received additional points from two forfeits, but could not put away the Warriors (1-1) at home.

The evening began with Jeremy Andujar (Sr., Tampa, Fla., Biology) earning six points for a forfeit at 125 points. John Altieri (Jr., Warwick, R.I., Sociology), wrestling up a weight class, then pushed the advantage to 9-0 by holding off Edwin Youngdell 19-13 in the 133-pound match.

Waldorf trimmed the deficit to three with back-to-back wins, but Joe Eads (Fr., Morrison, Ill., Biology) extended the edge to nine once again with a forfeit at 157 pounds.

The visitors claimed the 165-pound matchup, but 174-pounder Jason Beebe (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa) put the Statesmen ahead 21-9 with a fall over Dominick Fadden in 3:17.

Unfortunately, the Warriors closed with victories in the final three bouts, including a decision at 285 pounds to secure the dual meet win.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Minneapolis, Minn. Saturday to compete in the Augsburg Invitational. The tournament begins at 9 a.m.

William Penn University to Host ‘Cards for Jacob’

William Penn University will be hosting two consecutive “Cards for Jacob” nights during the men’s basketball games at home this weekend. The first game is slated for Friday, November 17th at 7:00 PM against Lincoln Christian and the second contest on Saturday, November 18th against Wright State Lake will begin at 2:00 PM. Both games will take place in Penn Gymnasium on William Penn University’s Oskaloosa campus.

About Jacob

Jacob Thompson is a 9-year-old from Maine. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 High-Risk Neuroblastoma. The doctors aren’t sure that Jacob will make it to Christmas, so for his last wish, Jacob requested to have Christmas Cards sent to him from all around the country. William Penn University would like to invite anyone planning to attend the games this weekend, to bring along a card for Jacob.

Band Members From William Penn University Chosen For Honor Band

Four collegiate band members have been selected to participate in the 24th Annual Iowa Collegiate Honor Band. This year’s guest conductor for the Iowa Collegiate Honor Band is Dr. Jack Stamp.

Students selected from local William Penn University include:

Mallari Winegar of Rose Hill, IA – Clarinet; senior music education major.
Joseph Criscuolo of Pella, IA – Alto Saxophone; senior music education major.
Adam Genskow of Oskaloosa, IA – Tenor Saxophone; senior music education major.
Steve Residor of St. Louis, MO – Trombone; senior music education major.

The event is open to the public and free to attend. The honor band will rehearse Nov. 17– 18, with their performance at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18. The rehearsals and performance will be held at Josephine Tope Community Auditorium attached to Nevada High School, located at 1001 15th St. Nevada, IA 50201.

About Dr. Jack Stamp

Dr. Jack Stamp is currently an adjunct professor of music at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where he teaches conducting and composition. Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Stamp served as Director of Band Studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania for 25 years and served as chairperson of the music department for six years. While at IUP, he was awarded Distinguished University Professor.

Dr. Stamp holds a DMA degree in Wind Conducting from Michigan State University where he studied with Eugene Corporon. An internationally recognized composer of wind band music, Dr. Stamp studied composition with Robert Washburn, Fisher Tull, Joan Tower, David Diamond, and Richard Danielpour.

He was the founder/conductor of the Keystone Wind Ensemble, a wind band dedicated to the recording of forgotten band literature. The ensemble boasts over 20 commercial compact disc releases. He is a contributing author to the “Teaching Music Through Performance in Band” series and resides in Hudson, WI with his wife, LeAnn.
