Presentation Features Tips for Garden Photography

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – Due to their often vibrant and diverse nature, gardens are a great subject for photographers to capture and turn into art. According to a news release from the Mahaska County Master Gardeners, there will be a seminar entitled “Better Garden Photography” presented by J.O. Parker on Tuesday Feb. 13 at 6:30 pm. The presentation will aim to help participants learn simple tips for taking better garden photos. It will be held at the Mahaska County Extension and Outreach office and will be free and open to the public.

About the Speaker

J.O. Parker is a writer and photographer from Montezuma, Iowa. He holds a BS in Agricultural Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia. J.O. spent nearly 18 years as an editor and photographer at four community newspapers before switching gears. He currently works at Monsanto and does freelance work. J.O. enjoys telling people’s stories through photographs and words, teaching photography to 4-H’ers, and attending steam engine shows and antique collecting with his wife, Debbie.

About Mahaska County Master Gardeners

Mahaska County Master Gardeners are celebrating their fourteenth year. The local program organized after the county held their first training. The educational volunteer program, sponsored by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, provides current, research based, home horticulture information and education to the citizens of Iowa through programs and projects. Master Gardeners receive horticulture training, and volunteer to promote a mission of education and service. The program is open to anyone 18 or older with an interest in gardening and a willingness to use their knowledge, experience and enthusiasm to make a positive impact on their local community.

ORLF Announces Scholarship Availablity

(Ottumwa, Iowa)–The Ottumwa Regional Legacy Foundation recently announced that it has begun accepting applications for the Laboratory Control Ltd. Health Career Scholarship Program for the 2018-2019 school year beginning today, Feb. 1.

According to a news release sent by the foundation, nearly $350,000 has been provided in scholarship support to students in southeast Iowa since the program began in 2004. The goal of this scholarship program is to build relationships and provide support for homegrown medical students in the hopes that they will someday return to the community to practice.

Eligible applicants must reside in one of the following counties in Iowa: Appanoose, Davis, Jasper, Jefferson, Henry, Keokuk, Mahaska, Monroe, Van Buren and Wapello. Qualified applicants must also be enrolled in a state or nationally accredited program of study that focuses on an eligible health care field of study, have graduated high school by September, 2018, have at least 30 hours of college credit and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Scholarship awards are paid directly to the successful applicant’s college or university and may be used for education expenses, including tuition, books and other fees. Applicants may submit their online application at www.orlf.org. No paper applications will be accepted. The deadline for application submission is midnight on March 31, 2018.

MHP Responds to Flu Levels in Oskaloosa

MAHASKA COUNTY – In response to the widespread level of influenza in the Oskaloosa community, the MHP Medical Group is now offering a flu vaccine clinic Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm by registering at door #4 on the MHP campus, until further notice.

According to Executive Director of Clinics Andrea Hagist, RN, MSN, people can stop by with no restrictions and no appointment, and insurance can be billed. “It’s not too late to get a flu vaccination,” Hagist said. “Health officials say that influenza will continue to circulate in the US and typically peaks in February. Getting vaccinated now will still offer protection for most of the flu season.”

Hagist said it’s always good practice to use the 3 Cs: Cover your cough or sneezes; Clean your hands often; and Contain germs by staying home when ill.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, the predominant flu strain this season is AH3N2, which typically causes serious illnesses, hospitalizations and even death, particularly for those who are very young or old and those with weakened immune systems. The flu is a respiratory illness caused by viruses. It comes on suddenly and symptoms may include fever, headache, tiredness, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion and body aches. Illness typically lasts two to seven days, and often puts healthy people in bed for days.

“Remember, serious illness from the flu is more likely in certain groups of people, including people 65 and older, pregnant women, people with certain chronic medical conditions and young children,” Hagist stressed.

“It’s also important to contact your health care provider as soon as possible after flu symptoms begin, especially if you are at high risk of complications and serious disease. If you start on anti-viral medications within a day or two of when your symptoms start, your risk of serious disease, hospitalization and even death can be significantly reduced.”

Eggs & Issues Resumes Jan. 13

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa)–Eggs & Issues is back in action this Saturday, Jan. 13 from 8:30–9:30AM at Smokey Row in Oskaloosa. According to a news release sent by the Oskaloosa Area Chamber & Development Group, the first featured panel will consist of Oskaloosa Mayor Dave Krutzfeldt and Mahaska County Supervisor Willie VanWeelden. Former Sen. Tom Rielly of Oskaloosa will act as moderator during this first Eggs & Issues event.

“Be sure to join us as we hear from our City and County Representatives,” reads the Chamber news release. “Join your friends and neighbors to thank these gentlemen for their service and to hear about all the great things that are going on with the local City and County governments.”

As has been the case during previous Eggs & Issues installations, the setting is informal and attendees are encouraged to personally meet and speak to their elected representatives. MidWestOne Bank will provide complimentary coffee during this event and the staff from George Daily Auditorium has volunteered to run the sound system.

The next Eggs & Issues is slated for Saturday, Jan. 27 at 8:30AM and will feature Iowa Senator Ken Rozenboom (R–Oskaloosa) and House Representative Guy Vander Linden (R–Oskaloosa). Mayor Dave Krutzfeldt will return to the forum on Jan. 27, however he will act only as a moderator and will not re-join the panel at that time.

Annual MCCB Bird Food Giveaway Planned

(MAHASKA COUNTY, Iowa) – The Mahaska County Conservation Board (MCCB) recently announced it will again hold its annual MCCB Bird Food Giveaway later this month.

On Saturday, Jan. 27, from 8:00AM–noon, visitors may take to the east side of the conservation center at Russell Wildlife in New Sharon to pick up cracked corn for feeding birds, free of charge. Although participants must bring their own buckets to fill, a news release sent by the Board states that staff will assist in both filling and carrying buckets.

The Mahaska County Conservation Board was established in January 1975. According to the MCCB website, the purpose of the Conservation Board is to provide quality parks, recreation, conservation, and environmental education opportunities for the public.

The five members of the Conservation Board are appointed by the Board of Supervisors for five year terms. They serve without pay, but receive their actual expenses incurred while carrying out their duties. The board meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7:30PM, and public participation is welcomed.

Massages Have Merit During Cold Weather

(MAHASKA COUNTY, Iowa) – The cold and flu season is well upon us, when the weather gets cooler and germs are more prevalent. A massage to boost the immune system would be a good way to stay healthy, energized and reduce stress.

According to the American Massage Association, medical studies have found that massage may boost the body’s immunity. Several studies have measured the stress hormone called cortisol in subjects’ saliva before and after massage sessions, and found dramatic decreases. Cortisol, which is produced when you are stressed, kills cells important for immunity, so when massage reduces your stress levels and hence the cortisol in your body, it may help you avoid getting a cold or another illness while under stress.

Mahaska Health Partnership Licensed Massage Therapist Michelle Hynick said studies have also found that massage relieves stress by lowering blood pressure, relaxing muscles and increasing endorphins. “Massage is great for relaxation,” Hynick said. “It improves mental outlook, promotes relaxed states of mental alertness and enhances calm and creative thinking. I think many of us could use some relaxation after the holiday season.”

Hynick explained that massage techniques move the blood through the body which brings oxygen-rich blood to tense and/or sore muscles, which help them heal and rejuvenate. The squeezing and pulling techniques of massage also flush lactic acid from the muscles which improves circulation of lymph fluid that carries metabolic waste away from muscles and internal organs.

Recent scientific research also proves that massage therapy increases immune function, decreases stress levels and reduces recovery time in many medical conditions including:

Rose Hill Soybean Farmer Wins Legacy of Leadership Award

Rose Hill native and long-time conservation advocate Mark Jackson was recognized with the Legacy of Leadership Award by the Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) during its annual awards banquet earlier this month in Ankeny.

Sponsored by Stine Seed Company, the award is given to an Iowa soybean farmer who has demonstrated a passionate and relentless commitment to growing the soybean industry in Iowa.

Along with his wife JoAnn and son Mike, Jackson grows soybeans and corn and manages a wean-to-finish swine operation on their Mahaska County farm. Jackson has served ISA since 2003 on various committees including research, market development and legislative efforts. Jackson is also past president of the Iowa Soybean Association and served nine years as a director with the American Soybean Association. He is also past chairman for the county Farm Bureau and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and a past director on the Iowa Soybean Promotion Board.

“It’s about leadership, passion and commitment,” said Jackson. “I’m surrounded by leaders who are dedicated to making the soybean industry better and I’m humbled that peers would recognize the small role I’ve played in that pursuit.”

Identity Released on Deceased Pilot After Crash

On Saturday, December 23, 2017, at approximately 2:20 PM officials of the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to 2082 210th Street about an aircraft that had crashed. Upon emergency personnel’s arrival, it was discovered that the pilot was deceased.

The results of the preliminary investigation indicate that the aircraft struck a power line causing it to crash to the ground. Officials are not speculating on what caused the aircraft to be flowing this low.

The pilot that died as a result of the airplane accident has been identified as 70-year-old Bruce Gene Devick of Marshalltown, Iowa.

Devick was piloting a single engine, 2-seat light sport airplane.

The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this accident, along with members of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
