Last night in regular season volleyball, you heard the Oskaloosa Indians compete very hard against the #12 team in the state, the Pella Lady Dutch. The match was very tight, but it was spurts by the Dutch that helped them get a 3 sets to 1 victory to close out the regular season. Oskaloosa won the second set with a gutsy performance, 28-26, but in each of the other three sets, Pella had a run in the beginning of the set to get some breathing room, and Osky just couldn’t close the gap.

Oskaloosa will begin the postseason next Monday at home against Knoxville. Pella gets a first round bye, but then will play either Grinnell or Newton in the regional semifinals next Thursday. We will have all Oskaloosa postseason volleyball as far as the Indians go, with Monday’s broadcast on both 104.9 FM KBOE and 99.5 FM and AM 740 KMZN and kboeradio.com. The pregame show will start around 6:45 for the 7 PM first serve.

The first night of regional play in high school volleyball took place last night, and a large group of teams’ seasons came to an end.

In Class 1A Region 5, Montezuma slipped by Belle Plaine, 3 sets to 2. Monte moves into the next round to face Iowa Valley, who is ranked 9th in the state. Iowa Valley beat Lynnville-Sully in straight sets. That match will be in Marengo next Tuesday at 7 PM.

In Class 1A Region 6, WACO took out English Valleys in straight sets and will face Burlington Notre Dame next Tuesday. In the lower portion of the bracket, Keota fell in straight sets to Iowa Mennonite School. IMS has the unenviable task of having to bring down #5 Springville in the next round next Tuesday on the road.

In Region 8 in Class 1A, Sigourney and Tri-County was postponed until tonight due to a power outage. That game will begin at 7 PM this evening, and we will have reports from the matchup on 104.9 FM KBOE during the night. The winner of that match will face New London, who is ranked #10 in the state. They allowed only 11 points to Maharishi last night in all three sets combined. Melcher-Dallas fell to Southeast Warren, who will now face Twin Cedars in Bussey next Tuesday. In the bottom part of the bracket, Moravia barely slipped by Mormon Trail in straight sets, winning each set by no more than three points. The Mohawks will face Seymour next Tuesday at home.

In Class 2A Region 4, Pella Christian beat North Mahaska, 3 sets to 1, in a match you heard on 104.9 FM KBOE. Pella Christian now faces #3 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in a match you’ll hear next Tuesday. That will be on 99.5 FM and AM 740 KMZN and kboeradio.com starting around 6:45 for the 7 PM first serve.

Also in the Region 4 bracket, Pekin swept Van Buren, and will face Cardinal in Eldon next Tuesday in a very interesting matchup in the quarterfinals. In the bottom half of the bracket, Pleasantville was swept by Des Moines Christian.

In Class 2A Region 8, BGM was taken out in straight sets by Iowa City Regina, who will face #4 West Branch in the second round next Tuesday on the road.

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont wrapped up their regular season over the weekend by taking care of business against three opponents at the Mediapolis tournament.

The Rockets strolled past Fort Madison, Holy Trinity Catholic, and Mediapolis in straight sets to move to 32-2 on the season heading into regional play.

Karlie Taylor was again the offensive star, getting 42 kills on the day. Taylor Leffler also had a great trip, getting 11 kills and matchup Taylor with 5 blocks.

EBF is ranked #3 in the state heading into the first round, where they get a bye. The Rockets will play the winner of the Pella Christian vs. North Mahaska match in New Sharon.

You can hear that first round tilt at 7 PM on 104.9 FM KBOE and on kboeradio.com tonight with Jamie Brockman on the call. EBF’s date with the winner will be next Tuesday, October 27^th, at 7 PM in Eddyville.

Playoff time is upon us in high school football, and the Oskaloosa Indians have found a way to hang in the race to get to the postseason.

That being said, the Indians will need the right scenario to occur if they will be playing in the first round next Wednesday night.

There is a three-way tie for the last playoff spot coming into the final week of the season in Class 3A District 7 between Chariton, Knoxville, and Oskaloosa.

It’s important to note that three positions have been clinched in District 7. Pella is the district champion and will have the #1 seed regardless of their Week 9 result, and the same goes for Norwalk in the #2 spot. Saydel finishes in seventh.

Everything else is up for grabs, and there are eight possible scenarios for Friday.

The three big matchups are:

• Carlisle at Oskaloosa
• Chariton at ^#1Pella
• ^#6Norwalk at Knoxville

Here’s how each scenario plays out:

All Three Schools Lose – This is the most likely scenario, as Chariton, Knoxville, and Osky will all go in as huge underdogs in Week 9. If this occurs, the three-way tiebreak remains, and the Point Differential Tiebreaker will be used. Chariton would come out on top in any scenario with any score difference with Knoxville the first team out, and Osky coming in after that.

3. Carlisle – 6-3 (4-2)
   4. Chariton – 5-4 (2-4)
   ———————————-
   5. Knoxville – 5-4 (2-4)
   6. Oskaloosa – 2-7 (2-4)

Only Oskaloosa Wins – If Oskaloosa is the only team to win of the three, they would leapfrog both Chariton and Knoxville and tie Carlisle, in which case the head-to-head would give Oskaloosa the #3 seed.

3. Oskaloosa – 3-6 (3-3)
   4. Carlisle – 5-4 (3-3)
   ———————————-
   5. Chariton – 5-4 (2-4)
   6. Knoxville – 5-4 (2-4)

Only Knoxville Wins – If Knoxville pulls the upset on Norwalk, while Chariton and Oskaloosa lose, then it is Knoxville who will jump into the playoffs. They lost previously to Carlisle this season, which is why they are stuck at #4.

3. Carlisle – 6-3 (4-2)
   4. Knoxville – 6-3 (3-3)
   ———————————-
   5. Chariton – 5-4 (2-4)
   6. Oskaloosa – 2-7 (2-4)

Only Chariton Wins – Chariton already has the inside track with their point differential margin, but they could solidify the #4 seed by beating Pella in Week 9. Carlisle took out Chariton earlier this year to hold that Head-To-Head Tiebreaker.

3. Carlisle – 6-3 (4-2)
   4. Chariton – 6-3 (4-2)
   ———————————-
   5. Knoxville – 5-4 (2-4)
   6. Oskaloosa – 5-4 (2-4)

Only Oskaloosa and Knoxville Win – This is where it gets tricky. Oskaloosa lost to Knoxville, and would have beaten Carlisle to get to this point, and Knoxville lost to Carlisle earlier this season. Everyone would have a 3-3 record in district play, and would have a 1-1 record against each other this year. That means that the Point Differential Tiebreak comes into play once again. And again, Oskaloosa would be on the outside looking in. Carlisle has a comfortable lead, and would not be tested for the #3 spot, with Knoxville taking the 4^th spot, regardless of the final score.

3. Carlisle – 5-4 (3-3)
   4. Knoxville – 6-3 (3-3)
   ———————————-
   5. Oskaloosa – 3-6 (3-3)
   6. Chariton – 5-4 (2-4)

Only Oskaloosa and Chariton Win – This is another ideal scenario for Osky. Should Chariton beat Pella while Osky pulls the home upset on Carlisle, that sets up another three-way tie. But this time, Oskaloosa has beaten both of the teams they are tied with, therefore giving them the highest seed of the three. Carlisle beat Chariton earlier this year, so they would be safe as well.

3. Oskaloosa – 3-6 (3-3)
   4. Carlisle – 5-4 (3-3)
   ———————————-
   5. Chariton – 6-3 (3-3)
   6. Knoxville – 5-4 (2-4)

Only Chariton and Knoxville Win – This is another scenario which will be solved by the Head-To-Head Tiebreak, and Oskaloosa is outside of the pack with the loss. Chariton is safely ahead of Knoxville due to their victory against the Panthers earlier this year.

3. Carlisle – 6-3 (4-2)
   4. Chariton – 6-3 (3-3)
   ———————————-
   5. Knoxville – 6-3 (3-3)
   6. Oskaloosa – 2-7 (2-4)

All Three Schools Win – In this scenario, Chariton would upset Pella, Knoxville would upset Norwalk, and Oskaloosa would beat Carlisle. This sets up a four-way tie for the #3 spot with the three schools in question and Carlisle. At that point, the tie-break goes to the teams with the best head-to-head records against the teams that they beat. Oskaloosa would be 2-1 against those teams, just like Carlisle, while Chariton and Knoxville would be 1-2. Osky would get the tie-break over Carlisle by beating them in Week 9, so the standings would look like this:

3. Oskaloosa – 3-6 (3-3)
   4. Carlisle – 5-4 (3-3)
   ——————————————————
4. Chariton – 6-3 (3-3)
   6. Knoxville – 6-3 (3-3)

As you can see, there are many ways this could play out. From Oskaloosa’s standpoint, the first thing that needs to happen is a win over Carlisle on their home field. If they lose, there is no possible scenario that the Indians could back into the playoffs, as there isn’t enough room to catchup in the Point Differential Tiebreaker, regardless of the other scores in the district.

You can catch all the action on Friday night at 6 PM, as the Brown’s Shoe Fit Pregame Show gets your ready for the Indians game in Oskaloosa against Carlisle, which can be heard on 99.5 FM and AM 740 KMZN and on kboeradio.com.

Following a weekend that did not see any huge upsets, two programs right in front of the Statesmen football team did fall as the navy and gold moved up a pair of rungs in the sixth NAIA top-25 rating.

William Penn (5-2, 1-0 Heart), which opened Heart of America Athletic Conference North Division play with a 34-31 win over Peru State (Neb.), is now #14 with 172 points. Still the third best team in the conference, WPU only trails #4 Baker (Kan.) and #5 Grand View, while #16 Benedictine (Kan.) is also representing the Heart this week.

The entire top 10 is unchanged with Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) again first with 338 points and 12 first-place votes. Southern Oregon (two first-place votes), Morningside (one top vote), Baker, and Grand View round out the top five.

WPU travels to Canton, Mo. Saturday to meet Culver-Stockton in a Heart North Division matchup at 2 p.m.
