Oskaloosa–William Penn enters 2016 as a legitimate contender for national success as the NAIA’s preseason top-25 rating was released Monday.

The Statesmen (7-4 in 2015, 3-2 North) popped up two spots from the summer ranking to #23 with 54 points.  The Heart of America Athletic Conference is also represented by #5 Baker (Kan.), #6 Grand View, and #15 Benedictine (Kan.), while MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) (tied for #32) and Missouri Valley (tied for #34) are in the receiving votes section.

Defending national champion Marian (Ind.) is a unanimous #1 with 314 points and all 14 first-place votes.  2015 runner-up Southern Oregon is second, while Morningside, Saint Francis (Ind.), and Baker round out the top five.

WPU steps out of the gate with a big one, hosting 34th-ranked Missouri Valley on August 27 in a Heart crossover game at 6 p.m.

We continue our look at the districts in our area with Class 3A District 6.

The two-time defending state champion Pella Little Dutch have won their last 28 games in back-to-back unbeaten seasons, but it won’t be easy to do it a third time.

Pella defeated Norwalk twice last season, including in the championship game. Norwalk is also in District 6 and with returning quarterback Brady Brandsfield, they are looking to leapfrog the Dutch.

Norwalk and Pella will undoubtedly be the top two teams on paper heading into the season, even with Pella losing Class 3A Player of the Year Noah Clayberg to graduation.

The teams that are looking to muscle into that mix are Bondurant-Farrar, Carlisle, Grinnell, Knoxville, Nevada, and North Polk.

Bondurant-Farrar was 6-4 last season and will be in good shape to challenge for a top three spot in the district. Carlisle (6-4) is in very much the same position, having finished third last year in the same district behind Pella and Norwalk.

Knoxville was also a part of that district, and finished the season 5-4, missing the playoffs as the #5 team in that district (Chariton finished 4^th).

Grinnell also could be in for a leap as they return most of their top contributors from a 4-5 team in 2015.

Nevada finished 2-7 last season, missing the playoffs, and North Polk lost in the first round of the playoffs to finish 5-5 as a Class 2A team last year.

This district seems to have a few different levels but if a team like Grinnell makes a leap, it could get interesting to see if anyone can upset Norwalk or Pella for a playoff berth in this district.

We’ll keep trucking through our district previews tomorrow with a look at Class 2A District 5, which features Mid-Prairie.

Our odyssey through the 12 high school football districts involving area teams continues with a gander at Class 3A District 5.

Oskaloosa, Washington, and Fairfield are in this eight-team district that should be wide open in 2016.

Class 3A differs from Class 4A, as there are only seven districts with eight teams each. The top two teams from each district will advance to the playoffs with the top two teams who finished 3^rd in their district qualifying as wild cards to fill out the 16-team bracket.

Washington had the best record of the eight teams in District 5 in 2015, going 7-2 in the regular season before being upset by Solon in the first round of the playoffs, 17-14 in overtime. Solon is also in District 5, and after bowing out in the second round at West Delaware, 37-14, finished 6-5.

Smart money would be on these two teams to be at the top of District 5 this year, although Solon will need to replace a lot of their key playmakers from a year ago.

After that, there was no team in this district that had a winning record or made the playoffs in 2015. Oskaloosa will be a key team to watch, as all of their games will be broadcasted on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN, the KMZN mobile app, and radiokmzn.com.

The Indians went 2-7 last year, and are 3-15 the last two years. New Head Coach Jake Jenkins will turn a page in Osky football history with a new system and several capable returners to make the adjustment. Osky lost only 11 seniors and most of their playmaking core is back for 2016.

Osky has to feel like they can contend at the top of this district with Washington and Solon. Fairfield was a mediocre 4-5 in a weak district in 2015. That district also included Fort Madison (2-7), Keokuk (3-6), and Mount Pleasant (1-8). None of those teams will likely see much growth from their performance last season unless drastic leaps are made from key players.

West Burlington/Notre Dame rounds out District 5, and they went 4-5 last year in Class 2A, missing the playoffs. They also lost a couple of their top athletes.

As that collection of teams appears to leave a space, it should be an entertaining race for the top spot in the district.

Washington should be the prohibitive favorite, as they return quarterback Ryan Reighard from the 7-3 team last year. Solon would appear to be the #2 pick, but after losing so many top players on a team that barely made the playoffs and then pulled an overtime upset, they are far from a clear-cut contender.

Oskaloosa’s athletes could put them in a position to win enough games against their competition to put them in a spot to qualify for the playoffs.

Regardless of the lackluster record of most of the teams in this district, this will be a scintillating race in the first year of the reformatted playoff system.

While it will be hard to justify any of these teams as true state championship material, the reality is that Class 3A in general may not have the types of dominant teams we’ve seen in years past.

Expect plenty of coverage on Class 3A District 5 throughout the season as the Oskaloosa Indians look to battle alongside Washington and Fairfield for a playoff spot.

Tomorrow, we look at two-time defending state champion Pella and Class 3A District 6 as a part of our comprehensive previews of every district in our listening area.

We continue to look at the football districts that our area teams will be competing in for 2016 with a glance at the Ottumwa Bulldogs and Class 4A District 8.

Ottumwa missed out on the playoffs last year after winning just one district game, finishing the year 4-5. The loss of key players among the 16 seniors who graduated from the 2015 team will also make the transition to this season tough, but the schedule might work out in their favor.

District 8 has only one team that managed a winning record last year: state runner-up Cedar Rapids Kennedy who finished 13-1. Outside of that, Ottumwa had the highest winning percentage of the teams in this district.

Kennedy was fantastic last season, rolling to a 13-0 record before being beat by Dowling Catholic in the Class 4A State Championship, 41-10. They should be the heavy, heavy favorites to win this district behind returning quarterback Nick Duehr.

Even with the poor records, only one other team in this six-pack of teams missed out on a playoff berth last year, and that was Burlington. The Greyhounds were 1-8 and were the only team Ottumwa beat in district play in 2015. They did not manage a passing touchdown all season long, and should be considered the longshot to do damage in 2016 as well.

The Bulldogs will have three other teams they will be competing with for that second playoff position in District 8: Iowa City West, Linn-Mar, and Cedar Rapids Prairie.

Iowa City West managed to get a home playoff game at 3-6 last year since 32 of the 48 Class 4A teams qualified for the playoffs. They knocked off Cedar Rapids Prairie in the first round, 35-20, before falling in the second round to Bettendorf, 43-18. Their 4-7 record was hard fought, as most of those losses were competitive games. But the loss of 26 seniors in big positions will make it tough to expect anything more from West in 2016.

Prairie’s season came to a screeching halt against IC West in the first round, but the Hawks did win one more game in the regular season, finishing the year 4-6. Again, the games were competitive for the most part, but realistic expectations would be another near .500 season.

The final team in this district is Linn-Mar, who went 4-6 in 2015 as well. City High of Iowa City knocked the Lions out of the playoffs in the first round. Linn-Mar really seemed to struggle against top competition, and had an early season loss to Cedar Rapids Prairie.

The prognosis for this district is up in the air. It seems like a good bet that Cedar
Rapids Kennedy will be on top and Burlington will be on the bottom, but the second playoff position is totally up for grabs.

Ottumwa did face Burlington and CR Prairie last season as part of district play. The Bulldogs beat Burlington and lost to Prairie in their last two weeks of the season. They will have to string wins together against the other middle-of-the-road teams battling to get into the 16-team bracket in Class 4A.

Our district previews will continue tomorrow, as we delve into Class 3A District 5, featuring Oskaloosa, Fairfield, and Washington.

Class 4A Football is always a gauntlet, no matter what district your team is in.

District 4 will be no exception, as Newton makes the jump up to 4A this season.

Class 4A and 8-Player will differ from the other four classes in rules for districts and playoffs. Those two will have eight districts, with the top two teams in the district standings making the playoffs. The other four classes will have seven districts, with the top two teams in each district guaranteed a playoff spot, and two wild cards will be selected to fill out the 16-team bracket.

The teams in District 4 are mainly unproven with the exception of perennial powerhouse West Des Moines Valley.

Valley has to be the heavy favorite to win the district, as they return their three leading skill position players on offense from their 10-3 state semifinal team in 2015.

Newton is the only other school in this district to return their starting quarterback from last year, as junior Garrett Sturtz will again be under center for the Cardinals.

Newton struggled last season after having a great 2014. The Cardinals went 1-8 in a mediocre Class 3A district, but got progressively better as the season wore on, winning their final game of the season, a 42-19 home triumph over Nevada.

The second playoff spot in this district will be wide open, as the other four teams in District 4 didn’t make it past the second round of the playoffs in 2015 and lost their starting quarterback.

Fort Dodge started the 2015 season 7-0, but faltered down the stretch, losing their last three games including their first round playoff contest against Southeast Polk, 42-0.

Southeast Polk was then eliminated by eventual state champion Dowling Catholic on the road, 51-20. SEP will look to improve from their 6-5 season in 2015, and should be among the leading contenders to compete at the top of District 4 with Valley.

Indianola sneaked into the playoffs last year, but was eliminated in the first round on the road against Ankeny, 49-7. That loss put the Indians at 5-5 for the year.

Marshalltown rounds out the teams in the district. The Bobcats went 3-6 last season and missed the playoffs.

With the new rules cutting the playoff field in half, Newton will have to pull several upsets to position themselves at the top to get into the postseason.

But with the new personnel taking over at key spots of the other high-profile teams in the district, the team competing with Valley at the top is a mystery until the question marks are answered at the beginning of the season.

As with the different format of the districts, Class 4A gets four weeks of non-district action to prepare. One of those games is their Week 1 clash with Ottumwa in a battle of the listening area’s two biggest schools. That game will be our featured game on the Mahaska Zone Network Game of the Week on 104.9 FM KBOE, the KBOE mobile app, and kboeradio.com on August 26^th.

If Newton is able to grow enough in those four non-district weeks to adjust to the Class 4A competition, things should be very interesting for the Cardinals down the stretch.

The football season continues to get closer, and the Mahaska Zone Network is proud to announce the 2016 Game of the Week Schedule.

The Game of the Week in 2015 featured nearly a dozen area schools for the first time ever in the regular season on the Mahaska Zone Network airwaves. This season, no less than 11 area schools will be highlighted with live play-by-play broadcasts on 104.9 FM KBOE, the KBOE mobile app, and kboeradio.com.

The action will kick off on August 26^th for a huge Week 1 battle with the only two Class 4A teams in the listening area as Newton hosts Ottumwa. Both squads are looking to bounce back from rough seasons a year ago, as both teams missed the playoffs.

In Week 2, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont travels to face Sigourney/Keota in a rivalry close to home. EBF moves into Class 2A this year, and S/K is the last Class 1A team the Rockets get a chance to face before they begin district play. EBF missed the playoffs in 2015, while Sigourney/Keota lost at home in the first round.

Week 3 is interrupted by a late-season NASCAR Xfinity Series race in Richmond, but there will still be reports flowing in from area games. During the Oskaloosa broadcast on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN, the KMZN mobile app, and radiokmzn.com, there will be live reports from New Sharon as North Mahaska hosts Lynnville-Sully and from Montezuma as the Braves host Pekin in an interesting matchup. Week 3 also kicks off district play for most area schools.

In Week 4, the listening area will get a chance to hear some 8-Player football, as Twin Cedars hosts Tri-County. The Sabers lost in the first round of the playoffs last year, but have room for growth. Tri-County is looking to improve on their 1-8 season in 2015 in this District 5 battle.

As we move through September, Week 5 will pit the North Mahaska Warhawks against New London in New Sharon. New London is the only non-area team slated to compete in a live Game of the Week in 2016. They just missed out on a playoff berth last year. This Class A matchup will be big for North Mahaska, who is looking to increase their win total from the two they snagged last season.

Week 6 is a rematch of a classic postseason battle in 2015, as Lynnville-Sully travels to face Pekin. The Hawks pulled a two-point upset in a back-and-forth thriller in Packwood last year in the first round. Pekin will be among the favorites to win Class A District 6, and will need a win at home against L-S if they want to accomplish that goal.

Week 7 is another NASCAR night, as the Xfinity Series takes centerstage on 104.9 FM KBOE. The late-season race is the Drive For The Cure 300 in Charlotte. While that’s going on, there will be a trio of games highlighted with reports during the Oskaloosa broadcast on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN. The reports will be coming from the PCM at EBF contest in Class 2A District 6, Louisa-Muscatine at Sigourney/Keota in Class 1A District 4, and Montezuma at North Mahaska in Class A District 6.

We’re back to normal for Week 8, and Montezuma and Cardinal will be featured. That game will be in Monte as playoff positioning will be on the line in Class A District 6.

Week 9 is currently open for the Mahaska Zone Network to select a game with playoff implications to round out the regular season schedule.

The 2016 season will be full of action and tight playoff races in all six classes. We’ll be following all season long with the Mahaska Zone Network Game of the Week on 104.9 FM KBOE, the KBOE mobile app, and kboeradio.com.

With the summer sports season now behind us, we now focus on the upcoming fall season and the excitement of football.

In 2016, the Mahaska Zone Network will again be covering 28 football teams representing 29 area schools in 11 districts in six classes.

In Class 4A, the Ottumwa Bulldogs are the lone area team, and they are in a very difficult District 8. They will be competing with Burlington, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Iowa City West, Linn-Mar, and Cedar Rapids Prairie.

Class 3A has a boatload of teams including two-time defending state champion Pella.

Oskaloosa is in District 5 and will be relishing a fresh start with new Head Coach Jake Jenkins. The Indians are joined by area teams Fairfield and Washington. The other teams in District 5 are Fort Madison, Keokuk, Mount Pleasant, Solon, and West Burlington/Notre Dame, who have bumped up from spending last year in Class 2A.

Pella is in District 6, looking for their third consecutive state title. It won’t be easy to even finish among the top teams in the district, as the team the Dutch beat in the championship game last year, Norwalk, is also in District 6. Grinnell and Knoxville join Pella as area teams. The non-area teams include Bondurant-Farrar, Carlisle, Nevada, North Polk, along with Norwalk.

Mid-Prairie is the only area team that plays in Class 2A District 5. They’ll try to get back to ranked territory as they were in the beginning of last season. They will face Anamosa, Camanche, Mediapolis, Mount Vernon, Northeast (Goose Lake), West Liberty, and Williamsburg in district play.

District 6 in Class 2A has several area teams headlined by perennial contender Albia. The Blue Demons lost some key pieces, including stud running back Carter Isley, but could again compete at the top of the district. They are joined by Centerville, Davis County, PCM, and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, who jumps up from Class 1A. The non-area teams include Central Lee, Clarke, and Chariton, who drops from being a Class 3A playoff team last year.

Class 1A is the smallest class in terms of our area schools, as there is only three that we are covering.

In District 4, Sigourney/Keota will look to compete for a playoff spot. The Savage Cobras will again be playing against powerhouse Iowa City Regina, and will also face Columbus Community, Highland, Louisa-Muscatine, Wapello, Wilton, and Van Buren, who struggled as a Class A team last year.

There are two area teams in District 5, and both will look to be playoff teams. Pella Christian will bring back the dangerous duo of quarterback David Kacmarynski and athlete Levi Jungling as they look to make a deep playoff run. They’ll be challenged by Pleasantville, who will need to address a few open slots from key contributors if they want to improve on their success in Class A last year. Those two teams will have to play well, as the district is tough with the likes of Central Decatur, Des Moines Christian, Interstate-35, Mount Ayr, Woodward Academy, and Woodward-Granger all in the district.

BGM is the only area team representing the MZN area in Class A District 5. The Bears will be among the top contenders, but will have a gauntlet of tough competition all season long. They will face Belle Plaine, Colfax-Mingo, Gladbrook-Reinbeck, GMG (Garwin), Grand View Christian School, Hudson, and North Tama (Traer).

District 6 will be much busier in terms of area schools. 2015 playoff teams Lynnville-Sully, Montezuma, and Pekin will join with Cardinal and North Mahaska to make up a handful of area teams. Danville, New London, and Winfield-Mount Union round out the District 6 list.

Finally, in 8-Player football, there are two more districts with area teams.

English Valleys is going in alone in District 4 against six non-area schools. The Bears will look to improve from a couple of down years against Cedar Valley Christian, Easton Valley, Iowa Valley, Lone Tree, Midland, Springville, and WACO (Wayland).

District 5 has four area teams in 8-Player ball. Moravia had a great year last year, but after losing star quarterback Briar Cochran, they’ll have a tough go to repeat that success. Twin Cedars brings back several top athletes, and Melcher-Dallas and Tri-County are looking to build on young cores. They will not have an easy ride through their schedules as top teams Colo-Nesco and HLV await. Meskwaki Settlement School will also be in the mix at the top of the district, and Seymour/Moulton-Udell rounds out the district.

The baseball season is officially over in the state of Iowa, and the postseason accolades will continue to come in for the next couple of weeks.

One of these is the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Series Teams.

The All-Star Series is a round-robin tournament format to showcase some of the best players in the state. The four teams represent Small Schools West, Small Schools East, Large Schools West, and Large Schools East.

On the Small Schools West squad, Pleasantville’s Zeb Adreon will be on the infield, and he’ll be joined by teammate Brock Busick, who was selected as an outfielder.

For Small Schools East, BGM’s Kaiden Fiebelkorn will be on the infield. Fiebelkorn was fantastic this season on the mound and at the plate, and he is rewarded with this selection. He’ll be joined by Albia outfielder Bryce Leshen, who had a great season for the Blue Demons. Sigourney’s Lee Crawford will be one of the assistant coaches for the Small Schools East team.

Large Schools East has a couple of top-notch pitchers from the listening area among the four pitchers named to the team. Pella’s Grant Judkins will be heading to Iowa City to be a Hawkeye in the fall, but will play in the All-Star Series first. He’s joined by Ottumwa’s Parker Thode. Pella Head Coach Jesse Jablonski will be an assistant for the Large Schools East squad after leading the Little Dutch to the semifinal round of the State Baseball Tournament for the second straight year.

There are no area players on the Large Schools West team.

The round-robin action will take place at Mason City High School from August 4^th through the 6^th and the championship and consolation games will be played on August 7^th.

The state baseball tournament is wrapping up over the weekend in Des Moines, and the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association has already honored the players for the 2016 All-District Teams.

In our listening area, we had dozens of players receive accolades for their work on the diamond this season.

In Class 1A in the Southeast District First Team, Moravia sophomore Mateo Varese was honored for his work as a pitcher. He was joined by Tanner Jansen of BGM on the pitching staff. In the infield, BGM’s Eric Weiss was selected as the second baseman and the Bears’ Kaiden Fiebelkorn was listed as the shortstop. Moravia third baseman Tucker Babbitt was also on the First Team, with the Mohawks’ centerfielder Avery Waybill also listed. Sigourney’s Peyton Crawford was also named to the outfield. Twin Cedars’ Trace Embray and North Mahaska’s Troy Roose were both named utility players on the First Team.

The second team has Cardinal’s Austin Bride listed as one of the catchers. He’s joined by Comet teammate Kaleb Aschenbrenner who is the Second Team Third Baseman. All four outfield slots were occupied by area athletes. Moravia’s Jake Martin, BGM’s Austin Keller, North Mahaska’s Clay Gleason, and English Valleys’ Andrew Kerkove were the outfielders. Cardinal’s Trevor Albert and Twin Cedars’ Marty Beary were two of the four utility players on the Southeast District Second Team in Class 1A.

In Class 2A, there were three different districts with area schools. The Central District had PCM’s Austin Brown listed as a pitcher on the Second Team.

In the Southeast District, Pekin’s Keaton Winn, an Iowa baseball commit, was named to the pitching staff. He’s joined by Centerville first baseman Daniel Hargrave and Treye Rinehart, who was listed as one of the five utility players. Albia’s quartet of shortstop Bryce Leshen, third baseman Gannon Osing, outfielder Cobi Thomas, and utility player Tyler Maddison rounded out the area players on the Southeast District First Team. Mid-Prairie’s Adam Schrock was listed as a utility player on the Southeast District Second Team.

Pleasantville got to the semifinals in Class 2A this season, and were listed in the Southwest District. The Trojans had first baseman Zeb Adreon and outfielder Brock Busick named to the First Team, while Colton Major was listed as a utility player on the Second Team.

In Class 3A, there were several top-notch baseball teams and that is reflected by the number of honorees in the Southeast District. On the First Team, Pella ace and Iowa commit Grant Judkins was on the pitchings staff. He was joined by teammate Tyler Hillman, who was named a utility player. Fairfield had four players on the First Team. Freshman catcher Kasta Papazaglou was joined by second baseman Alex Crile, shortstop Jordan Reid, and outfielder Cameron Baumann. Oskaloosa’s Ethan Arnold joined Papazaglou on the first team as a catcher.

On the Southeast District Second Team, Pella’s Lucas Hileman, Knoxville’s Ben Wallace, and Fairfield’s Tristen Ledger were all a part of the pitching staff. Pella’s Jaden Rolffs and Knoxville’s Calyn Bumgardner were named the two catchers on the Second Team. Fairfield’s Austin Simpson and Oskaloosa’s Bennett Spry were on the infield at first and second base respectively.

Finally, in Class 4A, Ottumwa had three players listed as a part of the South Central District. On the First Team, junior Austin Shotts was named to the pitching staff with senior Parker Thode named one of the utility players. Drake Craver was a utility player on the Second Team.

With Pella and Pleasantville making it to state and a handful of others substate qualifiers, it was a memorable baseball season in the Mahaska Zone Network listening area.

Football season is now right around the corner. With that, reserved tickets for Oskaloosa football games are now available at the athletic office at Oskaloosa High School.

Tickets can be picked up next week (August 1-5). Office hours are 9 AM to 3 PM Monday through Thursday and 9 AM to 12 PM on Friday.
