Nine Statesmen Taking to the Mats for Nationals

OSKALOOSA — Nine Statesmen women’s wrestlers will vie for postseason glory as William Penn competes in the Second Annual NAIA Women’s Wrestling National Championship Friday and Saturday.

The Championship, which will be held in Jamestown, N.D. in Harold Newman Arena, will consist of four sessions, beginning with Session I Friday at 10 a.m.

The finalized brackets were released Thursday afternoon and here are the initial matchups for the navy and gold:

At 101 pounds, Teya Garner (Fr., San Antonio, Texas, Biology), who is 16-16 on the year, will enter unseeded and will meet #1 seed Erin Hikiji of Providence (Mont.) in the first round.

At 109 pounds, Mia Palumbo (Jr., Oak Lawn, Ill., Exercise Science), who is 20-0 this season, is the #1 seed and will receive a first-round bye before meeting unseeded Angie Dill of Vanguard (Calif.).

At 116 pounds, Catherine Steinkamp (Jr., Quincy, Ill., Exercise Science), with a 23-9 record, is unseeded, but will receive a bye in the first round.  She will then take on #7 seed Ariana Martinez of Life (Ga.).

At 123 pounds, Joanna Vanderwood (Jr., Graham, Wash., Nursing), who owns a 17-5 record, comes in as the #2 seed.  The junior will receive a first-round bye before wrestling against either Larissa Kaz of Hastings (Neb.) or Kaitlin Castro of Cumberlands (Ky.), both of whom are unseeded.

At 130 pounds, Devin Patton (So., Plano, Texas, Business Management) is the #7 seed with a 21-6 record.  After earning a first-round bye, she will meet up with unseeded Paige Respico of Providence.

At 136 pounds, Adaugo Nwachukwu (Jr., San Jose, Calif., Exercise Science) is #1 with a 20-0 record.  She will open with Angie Prado of Life (Ga.) in the first round.

At 143 pounds, Isabelle Hawley (So., Winchester, Calif., Sociology) is unseeded, but will receive a bye in the first round.  The owner of a 15-4 record, Hawley will start nationals against either #7 seed Bella Amara of Southern Oregon or unseeded Makayla Munoz of Oklahoma City.

Also at 143 pounds, Naida Abdijanovic (So., St. Louis, Mo., Biology) is unseeded and will claim a first-round bye.  She has a current record of 21-13 and will then take on #8 seed Micah Fisher of Cumberlands.

At 170 pounds, Ashley Lekas (So., Plano, Texas, Business Management) is seeded #2 and will wrestle unseeded Kaley Rice of Texas Wesleyan in the first round.  She is 8-1 this season.
