North Mahaska Matmen 2-1 in Quad

NEW SHARON – North Mahaska opened the post-holiday wrestling schedule Tuesday hosting Class 1A Wapello and Class 2A Chariton and Fairfield. The Warhawks finished 2-1 on the evening with three wrestlers going 3-0. North Mahaska defeated Wapello, 50-16, Chariton 48-36 and was outdueled by Fairfield 42-32.

North Mahaska hosted senior night and two of the senior varsity wrestlers earned wins. Angello Wittenburg at 157 went 3-0 with a pair of forfeits and a pin. Another senior Austin McMahan went 2-1 with a pin and decision. The third senior William Goemaat fell in both his matches.

Junior Joel DeJong pinned all three of his opponents at 126 pounds and sophomore Ryan Groom was 3-0 at 132.

DeJong opened his night with a pin of Wapello’s Owon Meeker in 5 minutes 8 seconds. Blake Sharp of Chariton became his second victim in 2:22 and Fairfield’s Cayden Episcopo fell to him in 1:15.

Groom scored a pair of technical falls. The first came against Wapello’s Cohen Wolford 19-3 then pinned Chariton’s Dylan Chandler in 30 seconds. In his match with Fairfield’s Julian Pumphrey, Groom was close to a pin but had to settle for a 17-2 tech fall victory.

Wittenburg pinned Griffin Wills of Chariton in his only contested match in 1:19.

McMahan scored an 11-5 decision over Carter Ball of Wapello at 190 pounds. He pinned Chariton’s Cutler Arnold in 2:30.

Cole Wernli Took a forfeit at 138 then pinned Chariton’s William Yeager in 2:21 to finish 2-1. He lost an 8-5 decision to Fairfield’s Aiden Westercamp.

Hunter Wernli also finished 2-1 with a pin of Drew Chandler of Chariton in 1:42 and a 7-5 decision of Fairfield’s Zandrick Allison. 

At 150 pounds Gage Reis pinned Jordan Chamberlain of Wapello in 3:34 and Chariton’s Jaydon Narber in 50 seconds.

Chris Long had three battles scoring a pin of Wapello’s Xavier Strause in 1:54 and Simion Claussen of Fairfield in 51 seconds.

Max Reed earned a forfeit and pinned Chariton’s Kameron Douglas of Chariton in 54 seconds. 

North Mahaska’s other win came at 215 pounds when Hunter Brisel accepted a forfeit against Wapello.

The other wrestling seniors honored were 144-pounder Malachi Newport and manager Emily Ries. Senior cheerleaders Jocelyn Van’ Sant and Katlynn Fogle were also honored.

There was one female match. Amara Edwards-Hinton of North Mahaska lost to Fairfield’s Samantha Lyons in 1:25.

North Mahaska will wrestle at Sigourney on Thursday. They will face Sigourney-Keota, Iowa Valley and Mount Pleasant in the quadrangular. On Saturday the Warhawks will host their own invitational.
