BASEBALL
NEW SHARON – North Mahaska and HLV/Tri-County have had a pair of interesting ball games this season. In May, North Mahaska won 18-17 in eight innings. Friday night a single in the bottom of the eighth and North Mahaska won 1-0.
Both teams had opportunities but could not plate runs. The Warriors stranded six runners three of them at third. North Mahaska also left six on base with two at third.
North Mahaska speedster Lucas Nunnikhoven reached base on an error in the bottom of the eighth and stole second. Tyson Ferguson reached on an error sending Nunnikhoven to third. Jack Keldrman then laced a 2-2 pitch down the left field line and Nunnikhoven raced home.
North Mahaska collected five hits, two of them by Kelderman. Ryan Groom also had two and Dane Van Mersbergen picked up the other.
Hunter Wernli earned the win in relief. He threw 2/3 of an inning with a strikeout. Kelderman was the starter and threw seven innings. He yielded two hits with eight strikeouts, five walks and two hit batsmen.
Keegan Gorsch led HLV/TC with a double and Cael Weiskopf singled. Gorsch took the loss going the distance. He gave up a run on five hits, two walks, a hit batsman ad seven strikeouts.
North Mahaska improves to 9-7. They go to Montezuma Monday and host Oskaloosa Tuesday. Colfax-Mingo comes to town Wednesday.
SOFTBALL
North Mahaska scored 14 runs on 15 hits Thursday against Lynnville-Sully, but hits and runs were not forthcoming Friday when HLV/Ti-County came to town. The visiting Warriors scored three runs in the first inning then added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth en route to a 5-3 victory.
HLV/Tri-County outhit the Warhawks 8-6 and took advantage of three Warhawk miscues. The
Warriors got on the board in the top of the first inning when Ema Roberts reached on an error and stole second then scored after Ayla Hall singled. Reagan Molyneux walked and Erilea Kupka flew out moving the runners up a base. Hall and Molyneux would eventually score.
In North Mahaska’s half of the first inning Olivia Ridgeway singled and later scored on a pass ball. Neither team could find the plate through the next three innings
Randall earned the win for HLV/Tri-County going seven innings. She gave up six hits and three runs (two earned, striking out six and walking one.
Regan Grewe led things off in the circle for North Mahaska and took the loss. The starter allowed eight hits and five runs (two earned) over five and one-third innings, striking out two and walking five. Jolan Fogle threw in relief. She went one and two-thirds innings, allowing zero runs on zero hits, striking out none and walking none.
Grewe, Ridgeway, Kaylia Shipman, Maddie Doonan, Bailee Bandstra, and Kayla Readshaw each collected one hit for North Mahaska. Grewe and Bandstra each drove in one run.
Molyneux and Kupka each collected two hits for HLV/Tri-County. Molyneux, Hall, Randall, and Kupka each drove in one run.
North Mahaska falls to 16-3 on the season. They travel to Montezuma Monday then hosts Baxter Tuesday in a doubleheader. They host Colfax-Mingo on Wednesday and goes to Grand View Christian on Thursday.
