NEW SHARON – North Mahaska was playing without two starters, but English Valleys could not tell the difference. The host Warhawks hit 10 3-pointers in the first half and shot 57.7 percent from the floor en route to a 75-19 Class 1A District 9 victory over English Valleys.
Three of North Mahaska’s baskets to start the game came from long range as they built a 13-0 lead before Kane Axmear got a short jumper to fall at the 3 minute 23 second mark of the first quarter. EV was down 25-4 after one quarter and NM led 54-13 at halftime.
North Mahaska was playing without seniors Adrian Smith and Jack Kelderman who were out due to illness and injury. Their replacements, Trenton DeBruin and Jaxon VanDerVeer scored eight and seven points and grabbed five rebounds apiece.
North Mahaska recorded 21 assists and turned the ball over nine times to 17 for English Valleys. All nine players scored I the contest.
“It was truly a team win,” said NM coach Kevin Kelderman. “They shared the ball, and we were able to play everyone tonight.”
Several players contributed in multiple ways. Asher DeBoef led with 20 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals. Gabe Hora added 11 points, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Lucas Nunnikhoven chipped in 11 points. Reserves Luke Boender scored eight and Dane VanMersbergen had six.
North Mahaska shot 30-for-52 from the floor and 5-of-8 at the foul line. They forced 17 turnovers including 10 steals and blocked five shots.
“They shot extremely well tonight,” said EV coach Zach Weilbacher. “We knew they were a very good shooting team, and they proved that tonight. They overwhelmed us early like good teams do and we couldn’t get shots to fall. We had open looks especially early but they just never fell, and they made us pay on the other end.”
North Mahaska improves to 19-3 on the season and will host Baxter on Thursday. English Valleys ends the season at 4-20.
