North Mahaska Boys Claim SICL Crown

COLFAX – North Mahaska basketball coach Kevin Kelderman was beaming Tuesday night after his Warhawks upended Colfax-Mingo 79-39 to capture the outright South Iowa Cedar League crown. Kelderman, a long-time couch at North Mahaska, is in his first year as head basketball coach.

The Warhawks are 17-3 overall and 14-1 in league play. Their only setback was a loss to Keota, who lost to Sigourney, which gave NM sole possession of the title.

“Yes, it was a good night,” said Kelderman. “We shared the ball well with over 20 assists on the night and rebounded very well. We hit the offensive boards hard and that got us quite a few extra attempts.”

North Mahaska led 19-13 after one period then outscored the Tigerhawks 50-14 in the middle two quarters to secure the win. Eleven Warhawks took to the floor with nine scoring, five of them in double figures.

Adrian Smith scored a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Gabe Hora scored 13 with Asher DeBoef and Lucas Nunnikhoven chipping in 11 each. Dane VanMersbergen came off the bench to score 10.

North Mahaska shot 52.3 percent from the floor and hit eight 3-pointers. They pulled own 38 rebounds, more than half on the offensive end which set up second chance opportunities.

Jack Kelderman had a strong line with six points, seven rebounds, five assists and a blocked shot. Jaxon VanDerVeer came off the bench with six points, five rebounds and three assists. Trenton DeBruin also scored six points. DeBoef added five rebounds, eight assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

North Mahaska will close out the regular season Tuesday when they host Oskaloosa.
