MARSHALLTOWN – Aly Steil’s magical golf season ended Friday afternoon in Marshalltown at the Class 1A state tournament. She finished 33rd overall shooting a two-day total 190. New London’s Taylor Phillips won the individual title with a 149, two strokes more than Mount Ayr’s Jaylee Shaffer, who finished with a 151.
Steil was the only South Iowa Cedar League player to reach state this season. She was the first since McKenzie Fuller to represent North Mahaska. She scored a 98-92 – 190. She was upbeat after day one.
“I was nervous at the beginning, and I overthought some shots today,” said Steil. “There really weren’t any surprises. I had played the court last weekend. It was a great experience.”
Easton Valley won the team tournament with a two-day total of 363-348 – 711.
Steil’s teammates, Lacey Campbell, Avary Westercamp and Elise Westercamp were there to support her at the tournament. The foursome made up the golf squad and the first time North Mahaska has a full contingent for a team. Steil and Campbell will be juniors while the Westercamps will be sophomores. This may be the beginning of good times for North Mahaska girl’s golf. Al Hodgeman coaches the team.
