OSKALOOSA — The Statesmen women’s lacrosse team was turned away in its upset bid Wednesday, falling 24-2 to Missouri Baptist in non-conference action.
William Penn (1-4), which was outshot 46-5, could not get anything going against the Spartans (9-1).
MBU scored the first 12 goals of the afternoon, including posting 10 in the first quarter.
Ashlyn Hoffman (Sr., Bend, Ore., Nursing) finally got the navy and gold on the board with a free position goal midway through the second period.
Down 13-1 at intermission, the home squad broke through first in the latter half with Hoffman again putting away an unassisted ball in the opening minute.
Unfortunately, the Statesmen, who struggled to get the ball into their offensive end (4-for-16 on clears) could not do any other damage.
Goalkeeper Catrina Dinehart (Grad., Palmyra, N.Y., Master’s of Sports Management) made sure the margin was not even larger as she came up with 16 saves.
WPU committed 20 turnovers (six for MBU), while the ground ball category went in favor of the visiting team as well at 23-7.
Emily Ferguson (Sr., Waterloo, N.Y., Exercise Science) did not score, but did top the hosts with three shots.
“We played an uncharacteristic game and made uncharacteristic plays all around the field,” Head Coach Joshua Bell said. “However, this game showed us a lot of things that we can learn from and capitalize on. We know what we need to do to grow, and I know these young ladies have the capacity to take on positive changes, and they will.”
