OSKALOOSA — Three members of the William Penn men’s basketball team were lauded for commendable campaigns as the all-Heart of America Athletic Conference teams were announced Thursday.
Jaz Farrell (Sr., Miramar, Fla., Interdisciplinary Studies) and Shug Sneed (Jr., Chicago, Ill., Computer Science) were part of the 19-person honorable-mention team. The award is the first for both individuals.
The first and second teams consisted of 10 individuals each as well.
Manny Hammonds (Fr., Des Moines, Iowa, New Media) was also selected as the league’s Freshman of the Year. It is believed to be the first FOY award in program history.
Farrell averaged 14.7 points per game in addition to 4.8 rebounds, while also recording 38 assists, 27 steals, and 21 blocks. The senior shot 48.9% from the field (35.3% 3-PT) and 71.1% at the free-throw line.
He eclipsed double figures on 20 occasions with a season-high 29 points against Park on November 18.
Despite playing in just 18 games due to suffering a season-ending injury, Sneed was still recognized by the league as he averaged 11.5 points and 6.1 rebounds. The junior managed 21 assists, 14 blocks, and 10 steals as well, while connecting on 60.9% of his field-goal attempts.
Sneed hit the double-digit mark in nine contests with a high of 21 points versus Concordia (Neb.) on November 4.
Hammonds had a strong freshman season with 10.2 points per game. He also tallied 51 rebounds, 28 assists, 14 steals, and one block. The freshman did most of his work from behind the arc with 54 three-pointers on a 36.5% clip. He also shot 78.1% from the line.
Hammonds had 13 double-digit efforts with a campaign-best 23 points against Park on January 20.
Anthony Brown of MidAmerica Nazarene was tabbed as the Heart’s Player and Defensive Player of the Year, while TreVon Smith (Central Methodist) earned the Newcomer of the Year accolade.
Adam Hepker of MidAmerica Nazarene was chosen as Coach of the Year by his peers, while Matt Dickman of Graceland garnered the Assistant Coach of the Year laurel.
